A couple of weeks ago, Warner Bros mentioned that Baz Luhrmann's 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby with Leo DiCaprio was officially in the works, coming soon. Now Deadline reports that Ben Affleck is "in talks" to play the role of Tom Buchanan, joining a cast that also includes Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. Affleck has been flirting with multiple projects to direct next, following The Town, but it looks like he'll be acting once again before he directs his next movie. Luhrmann is directing in 3D, adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1923 seminal classic.
Deadline adds that Tom Buchanan is the husband of Daisy (Mulligan), in a role originated by Bruce Dern in the 1974 movie. Luhrmann, who wrote the script with Craig Pearce, is still working on casting roles like Jordan Baker (rumored to be Hayley Atwell), gas station owner George Wilson and his wife Myrtle. Tom is having an affair with Myrtle, and they all play a role in a tragedy. This is definitely an intriguing cast coming together, but that's totally expected for an adaptation as once-in-a-lifetime as Baz Luhrmann taking on The Great Gatsby. It looks like there's still news we have yet to hear, not only with casting but confirmation and actually seeing shooting start. We will be sure to keep everyone updated! How's The Great Gatsby cast?

Wrong. I picture Tom Buchanan as a young, arrogant Bradley Cooper type. (Mostly because I read the New Yorker article in which Cooper said he would like the part.) "Now he was a sturdy straw-haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner. Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward. " "As for Tom, the fact that he “had some woman in New York.” was really less surprising than that he had been depressed by a book. Something was making him nibble at the edge of stale ideas as if his sturdy physical egotism no longer nourished his peremptory heart." These are the two quotes I always go back to when I think of Tom Buchanan. I don't think Ben Affleck is enough of an egotistical jackass. There is something agreeable in him that I feel Tom shouldn't have.

All of the casting is spot on. Maguire for Nick is perfect. Dicaprio awesome. Mulligan brilliant. Affleck kinda douchey just like Tom. Great. great.

Affleck needs to stick to behind the camera where he does best. This is not good...

There is no way this movie will not be a complete dog. Baz Luhrmann is a stylist, not a director. The Great Gatsby is a subtle tale of identity and social fragmentation, and Baz Luhrmann is a man who named the main character of his last film "Drover". This is akin to making a western and naming the main character "Cowboy". Fuck this useless old douche and his crass, ugly productions.
