Ben Affleck Also Cast in Baz Luhrmann's 'Great Gatsby' Adaptation
A couple of weeks ago, Warner Bros mentioned that Baz Luhrmann's 3D adaptation of The Great Gatsby with Leo DiCaprio was officially in the works, coming soon. Now Deadline reports that Ben Affleck is "in talks" to play the role of Tom Buchanan, joining a cast that also includes Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. Affleck has been flirting with multiple projects to direct next, following The Town, but it looks like he'll be acting once again before he directs his next movie. Luhrmann is directing in 3D, adapted from F. Scott Fitzgerald's 1923 seminal classic.
Deadline adds that Tom Buchanan is the husband of Daisy (Mulligan), in a role originated by Bruce Dern in the 1974 movie. Luhrmann, who wrote the script with Craig Pearce, is still working on casting roles like Jordan Baker (rumored to be Hayley Atwell), gas station owner George Wilson and his wife Myrtle. Tom is having an affair with Myrtle, and they all play a role in a tragedy. This is definitely an intriguing cast coming together, but that's totally expected for an adaptation as once-in-a-lifetime as Baz Luhrmann taking on The Great Gatsby. It looks like there's still news we have yet to hear, not only with casting but confirmation and actually seeing shooting start. We will be sure to keep everyone updated! How's The Great Gatsby cast?
Wrong. I picture Tom Buchanan as a young, arrogant Bradley Cooper type. (Mostly because I read the New Yorker article in which Cooper said he would like the part.) "Now he was a sturdy straw-haired man of thirty with a rather hard mouth and a supercilious manner. Two shining arrogant eyes had established dominance over his face and gave him the appearance of always leaning aggressively forward. " "As for Tom, the fact that he “had some woman in New York.” was really less surprising than that he had been depressed by a book. Something was making him nibble at the edge of stale ideas as if his sturdy physical egotism no longer nourished his peremptory heart." These are the two quotes I always go back to when I think of Tom Buchanan. I don't think Ben Affleck is enough of an egotistical jackass. There is something agreeable in him that I feel Tom shouldn't have.

All of the casting is spot on. Maguire for Nick is perfect. Dicaprio awesome. Mulligan brilliant. Affleck kinda douchey just like Tom. Great. great.

I don't know if this casting have anything to do with Ben Affleck being in Bulgaria for less than 24 hours to have a look and discover the Boyana films location where both lame companies Nu Image and Millennium Films are shooting their movies in .... But take it as an advice and Ben must be aware that making movies in Bulgaria as (Shooting Location) and having those two companies ( Nu Image and Millennium Films ) as producers and using Bulgarian crew as "movie makers" .. were all a big mistakes and wrong choices ... Ben made some movies in the last years that bring him back on the track ... and he is a good director for sure ... But if he make any movie in Bulgaria .. believe me it will put him back on the zero point and this time it will be harder for him to come back ... Any actor or movie maker who shot movie and make a movie here in Bulgaria must know that the cheap things are like the chines instrument it will broke soon and it is not useful ... and by cheap I mean Bulgaria ( Because making movies in Bulgaria is cost less money because the Bulgarian crew and taxes are low and cheap ) Anyone who make movie here are having problem with their career or they have no idea what they are up to ... And everyone who made movie in Bulgaria lost his fame and respect ... Hope Ben will be clever enough to not step in Bulgaria again and choose a better place to make his movie in ...

anyone having doubts about Ben playing an egotistical asshole obviously hasn't watched Boiler Room!

Affleck needs to stick to behind the camera where he does best. This is not good...

There is no way this movie will not be a complete dog. Baz Luhrmann is a stylist, not a director. The Great Gatsby is a subtle tale of identity and social fragmentation, and Baz Luhrmann is a man who named the main character of his last film "Drover". This is akin to making a western and naming the main character "Cowboy". Fuck this useless old douche and his crass, ugly productions.
