Billy Crystal Talks Up Pixar's 'Monsters University' Being 'Hilarious'

Mike & Sulley are back! Pixar is already in production on Monsters University, a prequel to Monsters Inc, being directed by Dan Scanlon. The lovable duo of Mike Wazowski and James P. 'Sulley' Sullivan are back at the University of Fear, as it tells the story of how they became scarers, and friends, in college. Billy Crystal, who voices Mike, was at a Q&A for a Hero Complex screening of City Slickers recently and spoke briefly about the movie, saying encouraging things - for anyone that's worried. But there's nothing to worried about, this will turn out amazing, right? "It's really a great script, it's really funny." More below!
As of the Q&A, Crystal was in the middle of recording voicework for the prequel. Even though they're doing all of this now, we won't see Monsters University until June 21st, 2013, which so very far away. "We're having a blast together," Crystal boasts. "That's why I’m a little hoarse. I spent five-and-a-half hours today for our fourth session on Monsters Inc. 2." Honestly, I'm just excited hearing that the long awaited sequel to one of my all-time animated favorites is finally happening, even if it's two years away. Crystal continues:
"And I have to tell you something, it is hilarious. The Pixar people are geniuses. It's 10 years since the first movie. Yeah, it's crazy. And it's a prequel. They're in college. It's how they met, it's how Michael and Sully meet, and plan to become scarers at Monsters Inc. — so this movie ends where the other one starts."
As a recap, for anyone out of the loop, that is indeed the premise of the Monsters University prequel. And to be honest, out of all the possibilities of continuing on the Monsters Inc story/franchise/brand, I really like this, because the original film's perfect ending won't be messed with and we still get to see our favorite pals Mike and Sulley again. And if the Pixar "geniuses", as he says, are in back kicking ass as usual (ala Toy Story 3) then I think we're in for something fantastic indeed. Crystal also briefly mentions about Sulley: "John Goodman is a genius and he's great and we're really funny together." Good to hear. So what can we actually expect to see? "It's college pranks with monsters. And I wear a retainer. Mike has a retainer." Can't wait.
So a little Animal House mixed with all the Monsters Inc goodness, this sounds awesome already. Pixar is expected to tease a few of their upcoming movies at the D23 Expo next weekend, maybe Monsters U. will be included. We can only hope. In the meantime, we'll have to be patient as this is still a long ways out. Thanks again to Hero Complex for putting up these quotes. Who's excited for Pixar's Monsters University?

I dunno. While I know these sequel/prequels are meant to fund more ambitious projects, this doesn't strike me as very interesting. Also, it's been years since I've seen Monsters Inc.

Yeah I have to agree. While it is definitely a more promising sequel property than Cars, they could be doing something more interesting. I'd prefer an Incredibles follow up.

The Incredibles: The only Pixar movie worthy of a sequel.

Well movies like UP, Walle, and Ratatouille were better but if they had sequels it would mess everything up. An Incredibles sequel would work the best, but only if they bring Brad Bird back. I don't hate sequels as long as they're a continuation of the story.(Toy Story 2, 3)

It'll be interesting to see Pixar tackle a prequel and show the rest of the industry how it should be done.
