Brief Status Updates on 'The Dark Knight Rises' & 'Man of Steel'
Though these projects haven't even entered pre-production, DC Comics' franchise films The Dark Knight Rises and Superman: The Man of Steel are already two of the most anticipated films in the near future. While The Dark Knight Rises has plenty of circulating rumors and progress in the casting department, both of the films are taking their time with development. Producer Charles Roven, one of the minds behind the new Batman franchise and Superman reboot, recently spoke to ShockTillYouDrop while promoting Season of the Witch, and mentioned both films, including the prospect of the heroes' cinematic universes colliding.
Right off the bat, let's get this one out of the way. While we've heard rumblings of a Justice League movie and the potential of weaving a singular universe between DC Comics heroes like Batman, Superman and the upcoming Green Lantern, it doesn't sound like Roven has any desire to make it happen. The producer says:
"That may be in somebody’s mind but right now the Batman lives in his world and the Superman lives in his world. Those stories are those stories and we haven’t thought beyond each individual picture."
Probably a sigh of relief for fans worried about the gritty reality of Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise mixing with the more fantastical Superman and Green Lantern stories. As for the future of the Caped Crusader, Roven again confirms that this film will conclude Nolan's planned trilogy of Batman films, but he doesn't rule out the possibility of more. Here's what he had to say:
“Well, I think that Chris Nolan has said that he wanted to make a trilogy and this is a trilogy. As far as we all know, this is it. This is the trilogy. 'The Dark Knight Rises' is the third part of what Chris created with 'Batman Begins' and we’re not looking past that. I’ve said this about Chris before: I’ve never known Chris to do anything but focus on the movie he’s making. He gets completely immersed in the movie he’s doing and I know that all he’s thinking about right now when it comes to Batman, 'The Dark Knight Rises,' is making it the best movie he can. He’s not thinking, 'will there be another one?' And he’s already said, in his mind, it’s a trilogy. So I think he’s just focusing on making this the best he possibly can and that’s it.”
Nolan has always been shy about looking too far into the future, so saying there would or wouldn't be another Batman film will probably always be up in the air. But as of now, Nolan isn't planning doing anymore Batman movies after The Dark Knight Rises hits theaters in 2012. While many fans won't like to say goodbye to such a great franchise, there are also many who understand that Nolan isn't Bruce Wayne, and he can't keep doing Batman films forever.
And while news on the Superman front has been less publicized than anything happening with The Dark Knight sequel, Roven did address one particular rumor about Superman's suit. Apparently rumors have been circulating that the Big Blue Boy scout would be dressed in a CG suit similar to Ryan Reynolds' wardrobe in Green Lantern. Roven says, "You know, one of the things that you probably know about me and us working on this movie is that the rumors are the rumors and when we have something to say, we’ll say it. Until we do, there’s nothing to say.” So until there's something more official to say, stay tuned. Thoughts?
I already know Batman will be good. I just want to know how they will approach Superman

I agree, Batman will be awesome, I hope who ever makes Superman, take note on how batman was done, and make it darker and as real as it can be, to be from planet crypton.. and not so cartoony, and please make it from from scratch and not some continuation of the older supermans....

Just as long as they don't cast another kid to be Superman I won't have an issue. It's SuperMAN, not Superboy.

Way to go WB. The studio that is going to mess up the DC live action super hero films.

Everyone knows that Nolan will do what he does best. Batman is a done deal. I've got my fingers crossed for Zack Snyder's Superman, personally. God, I hope it's a homerun.

Nolan definitely can pull off a 4th film even 5th. I am secretly hoping for that to happen. It would be so bad@$$ to see Nolan's touch in Batman's entire universe.

I'm glad that Nolan is keeping his Dark Knight as a trilogy... Do it well...better than anyone else...and then walk away. It's one of the (few) things I admire about James Cameron...make something the best you can and when the requests for sequels come in, don't answer the phone (unless, of course, you're the one in complete control). That keeps the vision clear. The downfall to the first modern Batman franchise started when they tried to "re" capture the camp of the television series...and, for that matter, this same "homage" to the past was the downfall of Superman Returns. We went to the theater wanting a fresh start, and we got a re-hash of the Donner-era Superman. Whatever they do for The Man of Steel, they better update the take on the character and his world (like Nolan did for Batman Begins) or it will be doomed. Dooooooomed.

Batman is good hands but Superman... I don't know about Superman. How it could seem to be so hard for them to do him right is beyond me. Why can't Brandon Routh just come back and we can start over? I guess movie goers wouldn't be able to get past the shockingly flat Returns huh? Then again we love Hugh Jackman as Wolverine that we'll swallow X-Men Origins: Wolverine and give it a second chance with Darren Aronofsky on board. Granted his The Wolverine movie is expected to be the shit like Batman has become but I'll never trust anything Hugh says about a movie (script) being good again. Anyhow Green Lantern looks like shit. I don't know if all agree but it looks horrible past pictures. That trailer was so not Green Lantern for me. I don't dislike Ryan Reynolds, but for starters he isn't GL to me, Bradley Cooper is, case closed.
Johnny Neat on Jan 6, 2011
ahhh..wait, don;t judge the GL movie just yet. Having seen some photos and trailer does not entirely speak of the movie. a good film critique should see the entire film first before shooting it down...just my two cents.. peace. though i agree with you early on that Bradley Coop should have been GL and R.R should be playing the Flash instead...
Iggypop on Jan 7, 2011
hey 4real ur right GL does look sick Bcuz just like wit batman beginz they R going 2 show how GL Bcame GL from the beggining and everybody thinkz that just Bcuz itz not like the cartoonz they judge it then when they do see it then they like it but just like marval they R messing up cuz they dont have no x-men or spiderman N the maval movie that there making but do u all think batman superman GL the flash and wonderwoman should B N 1 movie ?? justice league?? hit me up on what u think

Joseph Dorame on Apr 29, 2011
Bring back Routh, he looks the part and has shown up well in other stuff since. Kill off the kid, send him off to bording school or just ignore him and do an epic battle against someone powerful. Lobo, Zod, someone powerful enough to kill him without kryptonite or a new continent
Ross on Jan 6, 2011
Listen everyone knows the first movie in a trilogy is the build up. Face it, it will be more about him becoming superman then him as superman. People will see it even if you do not. You do not like that idea? NO ONE IS TWISTING YOUR ARM! Just wait for the second sups film then you will get you epic battle. I mean wow people are soo stupid lol
Ron on Jan 7, 2011
Awwww... Wow. I totally forgot about the kid in Superman and all that. Routh was a really good Superman in that his movie was a complete homage to Donner and Reeves (which we all totally get). That said, my personal concern is the outfit and the underwear-over-tights look. The sickest thing about how Nolan did batman, was they showed him piece-mealing R&D sutff to make a suit to accomodate his training. We all saw watchmen and the justice Snyd's did them so I can only imagine what he'll do for the iconic Superman... (just no blue, computerized junk.... HA!)

Most people here are worrying too much, about the Superman series failing or Batman coming to an end. The fact of the matter is, both of there superheroes are so popular that it will never, not for a VERY long time, be the end of a movie series for them. Superman more so than Batman. The "Dark Knight" triology is fantastic yes, but, most fans and critics all seem to agree (this is me inclusive), that when Superman works WELL, it blows every other superhero movie out of the water completely. Think about it, they're a bit dated now, but the first 2 Chris Reeve Superman films are still as popular, if not more popular than the new Batman films, and imagine that on the scale of a new movie. The new movie will be down to earth, realistic, gritty, modern, with modern CGI etc. There is no question about that because that's what Nolan does. So, imagine combining the driving force of the Batman triology with the most popular superhero the world has ever seen. I'm sory Batman fans, but, respectfully, the Bat just doesn't stand a chance. And yeah, why does everyone always knock Returns? It was actually hugely profitable, and got REALLY good reviews from critics (I personally loved it, Lane was iffy but Routh as Superman was brilliant). Where has this consensus that it was rubbish and everyone hated it come from? P.S: Johnny Neat down there doesn't seem to like Origins : Wolverine? I loved it, and it got wicked reviews, so no one had to "swallow" it as you say. I'm just interested, did anyone else not like it?

i think ur high off ur ass respectfully batman is real as a superhero should B superman isnt even a man that foo is a alian from outter space so of course hez super he was better off as a marval superhero instead i think itz every sad that johnny depp isnt going 2 B the riddler like everybody was waiting 4 cuz that would of been the best way 2 end the batman moviez but if they make batman and superman and the gl and wonderwoman in 2 a justice league then that would B sick cuz letz face it superman it a hero that will alwayz B wack cuz all the superman thatz ever been made were boring and dum but chris nolan will hopefully make superman better then superman as ever been but plz being the riddler N the last batman movie if ur going 2 end the batman moviez
