'Captain America' Sequel Apparently May Not Hit Theaters Until 2014

Captain America

Back in April we got the expected news that sequels for both Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger were already being developed. Since then, Thor 2 has been set for a summer 2013 release (along with Iron Man 3) with Betty Jenkins recently entering early talks to helm the thunderous sequel. However, when it comes to Captain America 2, we might be waiting a bit longer. The Playlist recently spoke with franchise star Chris Evans who said Marvel Studios and Disney, "may wait until 2014 until they release the next Cap. Marvel has a lot of balls in the air, they aren’t going to cannibalize their films.” Read on!

Of course, with The Avengers bringing the whole superhero team to theaters next summer and two of those team members heading to the big screen in their own features in 2013, it only makes sense that Cap wouldn't return until 2014 (though a late 2013 release probably wouldn't be out of the question). But could we see Cap having a cameo in either Thor 2 or Iron Man 3? Apparently that likely won't happen. Despite the fact Marvel's deal with Evans to play Captain America includes three films featuring the red, white and blue clad hero in his own series and three films with him working alongside The Avengers, any appearance, no matter how minor, could count as one of those contractually obligated films. Evans explains, "Out of those six films, if I pop up in one of those [other films], it counts as part of the deal. So if they needed me in a third Cap, and I say, ‘Fuck you, give me $30 million,’ well…they want to avoid that.” It's disappointing that we'll have to wait until 2014 this flick, there's plenty of Marvel action between now and then.

I loved the Capt. America movie. But I think it's best that they spread it out. No need to push all these at once. Then will be left with other lame summer movies.

I don't see how this is bad news.  Take your time with the movie. Rushing it isn't necessary.  I like when sequels take a couple years, and three years isn't too much time at all.

I agree with Chazzy. I mean, we saw what "rushing a film" was like with Transformers 2, and when they waited a little longer to film Transformers 3, the movie came out bad-fucking-ass! Although it sucks being such a huge Avengers fan and having to wait that long for next Cap, its gonna be just as great when it does come out. My only question, is how the directors are going to explain why each hero (iron man, thor, and cap.....maybe hulk depending on how well ruffalo does) leaves the team and goes off to fight other villains alone instead of using their combined powers together, and why they all of a sudden come back together when they make Avengers 2 and 3? I hope they do explain that.

I agree, I'm shocked at how ALL of the Avengers are getting 2nd films. This is more and more starting to look like Avengers #1 is gonna be about them bring in/down the Hulk.

There are many Captain America allies and villains that weren’t included in the first film which they can utilise in future sequels and give us new stories.

only thing is it's going to take place in the modern time rather than WWII which is going to confuse the general audience.
