Casting Tidbits: Christopher Meloni, Ray Liotta and Liam Hemsworth

A Casting Tidbit rack? A Casting Tidbits rack. I don't even own a Casting Tidbit, let alone many Casting Tidbits that would necessitate an entire rack. What am I gonna do with a Casting Tidbit rack? First up, Deadline has word that "Law & Order" star Christopher Meloni has landed an unspecified role in Zack Snyder's Man of Steel. However, Vulture has since learned that he'll be playing a military general in the film. He also would have been a great choice for Perry White, the editor of The Daily Planet, though I still want Hugh Laurie for the role. Either way, Meloni is yet another interesting casting choice for the film.
Second, Variety reports Ray Liotta will join Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper in A Place Beyond the Pines, the next film from Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance. The story follows a pro motorcycle rider (Gosling) who starts robbing banks to support his newborn son -- until he crosses paths with a determined young cop (Cooper). Liotta will be playing a fierce, corrupt officer on the police force. Cianfrance also co-wrote the script with Ben Coccio, and if the film turns out half as good as the filmmaker's collaboration with Gosling on Blue Valentine, then this should be one to look forward to down the road.
Finally, Variety reports Liam Hemsworth, who snagged a coveted role in The Hunger Games, has signed on to star in the indie drama AWOL. In addition, Austin Stowell, Teresa Palmer, Chris Lowell, Max Adler and Aimee Teegarden are also in talks to join the film. The story follows a young soldier in Vietnam (Stowell) who gets dumped by his hometown girl (Teegarden) and goes AWOL with his best friend (Hemsworth) to return to the States to win her back.
