Casting Tidbits: Larry David, Brendan Fraser, Greta Gerwig & More

David / Fraser / Gerwig

This is Berk. It snows nine months out of the year, and hails the other three. What little food grows here is tough and tasteless. The people that grow here, even more so. The only upsides are the pets. While other places have ponies, or parrots…we have Casting Tidbits. First up, we know Larry David landed a role in The Three Stooges, but this revelation of his character was outrageous enough to warrant recalling the news for a small update. Jane Lynch is already playing Mother Superior at the childhood stooges' orphanage and Deadline says David will play Mother Mengele. Yep, it's a Jewish comedian playing a nun. More below!

Second, THR reports Brendan Fraser and Vanessa Hudgens will star in Gimme Shelter, an indie drama about a pregnant, homeless teen (Hudgens), who flees her abusive mother and seeks out her biological father (Fraser) who fathered her as a result of a fleeting moment of passion and intimacy. He takes her in at first, but then throws her out of the house when she refuses to get an abortion. Seems like interesting territory for both of the talents. Ron Krauss is writing and directing.

Next, Variety reports mumblecore talent turned mainstream actress Greta Gerwig (Arthur) and Orlando Bloom will lead the romantic comedy Lola Versus. Fox Searchlight is behind the film that follows a woman (Gerwig) who is dumped just weeks before her wedding by her college sweetheart (Bloom), prompting her to embark on a series of encounters in an attempt to discover her place in the world as a single woman before she turns 30. Daryl Wein is directing and he also co-wrote the script with Zoe Lister-Jones, who stars in the film as well.

Also, Deadline reports Laura Vandervoort (Supergirl from "Smallville") has landed a role in Ted, the raunchy live-action/CG hybrid comedy from "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane. The story follows a 33-year old man (Mark Wahlberg) whose teddy bear (to be created with CGI and voiced by MacFarlane himself) comes to life when he's young and poses problems for him as an adult when the bear's alcohol fueled, womanizing ways get in the way of marrying his girlfriend (Mila Kunis). Vandervoort will play Tayna, a gorgeous salesgirl and co-worker of Wahlberg's who is clueless to the gaggle of men who drool over her all day.

Finally, ComingSoon has learned that "3o Rock" hottie Katrina Bowden (recently named Esquire's Sexiest Woman Alive in 2011) will be part of the flesh feast in Piranha 3DD. In the likely bloody sequel, no one is safe from the flesh eating fish as they sink their razor sharp teeth into the visitors of the best summer attraction, The Big Wet Water Park. Bowden joins a cast that includes the likes of Gary Busey, David Koechner, Danielle Panabaker and plenty more actors who probably won't survive the flesh-eating fish.

That's all for this edition of Casting Tidbits. Be sure to stay tuned for even more casting news on the way.

I've always liked Brendan Fraser's smaller films such as With Honors, The Last Time, Journey to the End of the Night, The Air I Breathe, etc over the big blockbusters that he is in. These are the movies that no one sees or they go straight to DVD. No one appreciates those films and the only movies that he is in that get publicity are the godawful huge blockbusters like The Mummy films, Journey to the Center of the Earth, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Inkheart, etc.

you know, Dom, you're right. anyone who has seen him in The Quiet American (opposite Michael Caine) knows he can act, and his performance in Gods and Monsters (against Ian McKellen) - the best of his career for me - is a revelation. but, well, even apart from his big popcorn flicks, you only need say two words to destroy all of that in anyone's mind - Furry Vengeance. *shudder*
