Charlie Hunnam to Lead Guillermo del Toro's Sci-Fi Film 'Pacific Rim'

Though he may not be a household name, British actor Charlie Hunnam is on the rise to stardom. Not only does the actor star on the FX series "Sons of Anarchy" but he'll also appear in the Sundance selected thriller The Ledge when it hits theaters this year. But now Deadline reports Hunnam has just landed a huge role as the lead in Pacific Rim, the next film from Guillermo del Toro. The story sees extraterrestrial creatures hellbent on destroying the Earth as humanity must band together to develop highly advanced, and weapon-ready robots to fight face the creatures. It's like an epic playtime from my childhood coming to life!
Though details of Hunnam's character are being kept under wraps, THR says he'll be playing a pilot of one of the robots facing off against the monsters. This makes perfect sense considering the film is said to be influenced by mecha, the Japanese animation genre involving humans piloting robotic constructs. Aside from the concept sounding like a fanboy's wet dream, this will be the first film from del Toro since his 2008 sequel Hellboy II: The Golden Army. It's disappointing that we won't be getting At the Mountains of Madness anytime soon, but del Toro playing with robots and monsters on another film is certainly something to be excited about. What do you think?

I just started watching Sons of Anarchy. And I mean just, as in, tonight. And I'm hooked because of this actor. This is exciting news. I'm giddy now. BTW, he's British?! Never would have known...

Wow - Only a matter of time! From Biker Grove to Hollywood! I think he's excellent in SOA and was wondering when we'd see him in bigger projects. He also happens to be good friends with Brad Pitt so that must be of some help. Looking forward to this film for sure!

Hunnam wrote a script called Vlad the Impaler, and I think Brad Pitt showed interest in it? But, my memory is terrible so don't quote me on that one.

Agreed, Xamel. I mean, giant monsters, giant robots, massive action--c'mon, this sounds great! It's a pity that ATMOM is a no-go, but if this gets del Toro back into the director's chair, then so much the better.

He was already great back in Green Street Hooligans and he noticeably evolved in Sons of Anarchy. At first I thought the show was kinda cheesy and stupid because it's bursting with stereotypes and cliches about the subculture of biker clubs, but the characters really grew on me over the seasons and all the actors greatly improved, but Hunnam in particular blew me away at the end of the second season. Now he's gonna be in a movie directed by one of my favorite directors? Omg yes, please!

Wow. Hunnam looks a lot different in that picture!I am so used to him looking like that grizzled, biker, in Sons of Anarchy. Awesome news. Hunnam and del Toro should make for a kickass monster movie!!! The wait begins...

I've heard that these are not aliens, but giant kaiju monsters the size of Godzilla being released from a portal inside the core of the pacific ocean, in the future, so that's when the mecha robots driven by an american and a japanese pilot come to save earth.
