Chevy Chase Has Written a New 'Vacation' & Would Still Play 'Fletch'

Chevy Chase

Back in October of 2009, we learned that another Vacation film, now without the National Lampoon moniker, was on the way from producer David Dobkin (the director behind Wedding Crashers and The Change-Up). Then last year we learned Horrible Bosses writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley would be writing the script which would see Rusty, son to Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo's Clark and Ellen Griswold from the original film, embarking on a new vacation as the father of his own family. However Collider just learned from Chevy Chase that he's written his own new Vacation film.

Though Chase could easily be joking about this, the idea doesn't sound half bad:

“I’ve written an idea that would be basically like a “Swiss Family Griswold.” There’s a cruise, there’s a fire on the ship, we think the whole ship’s on fire and we jump—it’s just a little fire—and we end up on an island where we meet Randy [Quaid, who plays Cousin Eddie] somewhere who’s been left there from an old 'Survivor' series.”

It sounds like Chase already has Beverly D'Angelo committed to this story in some capacity, but I wonder how easy it's going to be to get Randy Quaid to get off the crazy bus he's been driving for a little while now. It's not clear if this project is something Chase is actively trying to get off the ground or if he was just being dryly funny, but I'd be down with that some Swiss Family Griswold action. Of course, there's been rumors that Chase is supposed to appear in the actively developing Vacation movie as well, so we'll see what happens.

In addition, Chase is also interested in reprising another classic role from his career. In February we heard news that Warner Bros. was looking to revamp Fletch for today's audiences, likely with someone other than Chevy Chase. However, the comedian is still quite interested in doing another Fletch film, but won't be involved with the new film unless he has that title role. Chase says, "I mean look, I’m not gonna do Fletch unless I’m Fletch, if they start writing something for a kid who’s Fletch and I’m just helping out, 'Bye.' I mean, there’s no reason why, at my age, I can’t still be Fletch. I’ve always been getting this impression that they’d like me to be mentoring a younger Fletch type thing." Maybe since Chase has been back in the spotlight thanks to "Community" it wouldn't be a bad idea to bring him back as Fletch, but I doubt the studio is up for that. What do you think of all this?

I'm thinking Chase is joking about writing a script.  Although I like the idea of the Swiss Family Griswold, and I also like the idea of Rusty's new family vacation.  As for Fletch, I don't know how well that film would do with a younger Fletch or even with Chase as Fletch.  It's just not a film I would be interested in revisiting or seeing revamped.

I love Chase in 'Community' but larger, full-feature doses of him may not be enjoyable. I also prefer his evil ways in 'Community more than the warmer tones of Chase in 'Fletch' and 'Vacation.'

His role/cameos in 'Hot Tub Time Machine' were also great, but again...small doses.

If he can get Quaid back, I might give it a chance. Cousin Eddie is one of the greatest characters in film.

I'd say Chase's performance in a new, "Vacation", flick will depend on the strength of the script as it must have a fresh spin on the Griswold clan and not just a rehash of the past flicks. This way it would appeal to mainstream audiences and not just those on a nostalgia trip! Chase's idea sounds fresh and is quite, good!

I'm not familiar with all of the 'Fletch' books but unless there's one where Fletch is older, than okay. From what I last remember reading, however, they want to do a young Fletch. I started to read "Fletch, Too" (I think, I was in HS) and he it was a prequel to the other books, so he was young. I, personally, can't see Chase doing Fletch again unless that's what one of the books reflects. I'd love to see a new one with a new story and actor. I really don't want to get into another 'Vacation...'

That idea of Chevy's sounds like a sequel to National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation 2: Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure.

A few years ago (3-4 years at least), I read in a Maxim or Blender or one of those magazines a little blurb from him about a new Vacation movie and this was the exact same plot. I wonder how many other people he's been telling this to and for how long?

Kevin Smith had a script for Fletch which sounded interesting. I doubt it would ever get made however.

I re-watched the original Vacation movie (since the last time I saw it in the 80s) and aside from the SCTV background players the movie really blows. Maybe it's because Chevy seems like such an unlikable person. Having said that, I've never actually seen his work in Community - which most people seem to like.
