Last December, we were teased with some vague information on The Place Beyond the Pines, the next project from director Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine) that would re-team the filmmaker with Ryan Gosling. At the time, the director didn't reveal much but simply said the film was "all about fathers and guns, and it has motorcycles and guns in it." But Cianfrance recently chatted with The Playlist and revealed the project is, "kind of an epic movie. It takes place over a couple of generations and it’s kind of a crime story, kind of a mystery. I’ve had people tell me they feel like its The Deer Hunter meets The Godfather.” Whoa! More below!
Cianfrance elaborated even more on The Place Beyond the Pines project:
“It’s a film that I started writing about four years ago. Right before my son Cody was born, this idea came to me about the transformative power of fatherhood and the idea of what happens though generations, the things that get passed down. It’s very much inspired by the books of Jack London—it’s kind of a Darwinistic idea of survival through ancestry."
As for Gosling's role, Cianfrance says, "Ryan’s going to play Luke, a motorcycle stunt rider who finds out he has a baby and he tries to become a father.” The Playlist found some more information about the role over at E! Online where producer Jamie Patricof said Gosling was planning on doing his own motorcycle stunts which could include riding the bike around one of those big round steel cages from sideshows and traveling circuses. The producer said, "He’ll take circus motorcycle lessons. I can guarantee you he’ll want to do his own stunts in the cages." Sounds like quite and undertaking, and a film that couldn't be more different than Blue Valentine. Interested?

I got the same feeling regarding The Tree of Life trailer by Terrence Malick, only this project seems more genetic than emotional.
