Disney Starlets, James Franco & Emma Roberts Are 'Spring Breakers'
Starting off their careers with pop music and overacting as only the Disney Channel can deliver, actresses Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez are looking to keep their careers fresh by working with indie director Harmony Korine on his next project. Variety has word that the two Mouse House starlets will star in Spring Breakers along with Emma Roberts (Scream 4) and James Franco. The story follows four college girls who rob a restaurant to afford their trip to the beach. With Korine involved, the material is likely even darker than the logline suggests, especially if you're familiar with his film Trash Humpers.
Roberts will play a Southern brunette who feeds off danger and Gomez would be a religious girl who isn't a thrill-seeker like the rest of the group. Hudgens' character isn't detailed in the news, but thankfully Franco isn't playing the fourth girl in the group, but rather some guy named Alien, a rapping drug and arms dealer who bails them out of jail and entices them to kill his arch-rival. Yeah, this movie sounds weird as hell.
Korine's twisted avant garde style and peculiar subject matter is certainly a far cry from the Disney Channel antics that kicked of the careers of Gomez and Hudgens, though the latter recently starred in Sucker Punch, and this film will like even be darker than the work Franco and Roberts have turned in previously. Considering Korine is also writing the script, anything can happen, and this is definitely seems like one of those films that actors look for when they want a project outside of their wheelhouse. Count me intrigued and anxious to see how these actors fare with such a unique filmmaker. How about you?

This is the kind of out-of-the-box thinking that makes me like James Franco as an actor. To follow up a big film like "Oz:The Great and Powerful" with something off the beaten track like this. And good for Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez for pursuing this as well. I don't know if they're right for this kind of film or not but good for them for being willing to take the risk.
