With Legendary Pictures making such great strides with a new Batman franchise from Christopher Nolan and a forthcoming revamp of Superman with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, executive Thomas Tull is hoping to spread that success across seas with Legendary East, the standalone Hong Kong-based entertainment company. Now the Asian-based banner has its first project as Deadline reports The Last Samurai and Love and Other Drugs director Ed Zwick will be at the helm of The Great Wall. Though details are scarce, the story will deal with the mystery behind one of the greatest manmade structures on the planet.
Zwick will also write the script with his longtime collaborator Marshall Herskovitz about the landmark wall, and while details are scarce, the idea apparently comes from Tull and World War Z author Max Brooks. It's no surprise that this first project takes place in Asia since the goal of Legendary east is to produce content that is as commercially viable within China as the rest of the world. In addition to Legendary's name helping boost the profile of the project The Dark Knight producer Charles Roven is producing through his Atlas Entertainment banner along with Alex Gartner. Personally, I'd like to have some more story details before getting excited about the film, but with these heavyweight producers and Ed Zwick on board, I'm hoping for a quality story and more great talent boarding the project soon as well.
