'Elite Squad' Star Wagner Moura Cast as the Villain in Sci-Fi 'Elysium'

March 9, 2011

Wagner Moura

Sounds like the Brazilian film Elite Squad is really helping launch some careers in Hollywood lately. We just recently found out director Jose Padilha was in talks to helm MGM's remake of Robocop, and now another talent from that film has just landed a big gig. Heat Vision and Latino Review both report that Wagner Moura, one of the actor's who has received plenty of praise for his part in the foreign action drama will play the villain in Elysium, the upcoming sci-fil flick from Neill Blomkamp (District 9) Though little is known about the plot, it's apparently set far in the future with social classes playing a prominent role in the story.

Moura joins a great cast that already includes Matt Damon (apparently playing an ex-con), Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley. The villain in the film isn't really detailed in the news other than having a crazy sense of humor. Honestly that trait seems to fit most villains from Emperor Palpatine (who loved leading the Rebel Alliance into a trap in Return of the Jedi) to Zorg from The Fifth Element (seriously, that guy was just crazy). As a huge fan of District 9, I'm really looking forward to seeing Blomkamp's next film. Sadly we'll be waiting until late 2012 before Sony sends this one to theaters, but I guess I can wait. Thoughts?

Awesome! I thought he was phenomenal in THE ELITE SQUAD. He totally deserves to be recognized in a lot more films!
