Terrence Malick & Christian Bale

A big announcement for Terrence Malicks fans today - FilmNation Entertainment has confirmed and announced (via indieWire) that they're in development on two upcoming Malick films, which finally sheds some light on the project he's been in development on with Christan Bale already. The first one is titled Lawless, and will star Ryan Gosling, including Christian Bale and Haley Bennett. The second one is titled Knight of Cups, and will actually star Christian Bale (in a lead role), along with Cate Blanchett and Isabel Lucas. Both films are currently in pre-production now and will start shooting back-to-back in 2012. Whoa!

Two new Terrence Malick films coming back-to-back in 2012, on top of the other (untitled) romantic drama with Ben Affleck & Rachel McAdams?! Malick is going all out. Here's the complete information below on the two projects as provided by FilmNation. This definitely confirms that the footage Malick was shooting at the Austin City Limits concerts with Bale wasn't for the Jerry Lee Lewis project after all, rather one of these two films. Considering there were sightings of Haley Bennett there, it's likely he was getting footage for Lawless from ACL, but we're not sure what it's even about. Here's everything from the press release:

The first film, Lawless, will star Ryan Gosling (Drive, The Ides of March) and boasts a supporting cast that includes Academy Award Winners Christian Bale (The Dark Knight, The Flowers of War), Cate Blanchett (The Hobbit, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) plus Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network) and Haley Bennett (Marley & Me, The Haunting of Molly Hartley).

The second film, Knight of Cups, will star Christian Bale with a supporting cast also including Cate Blanchett as well as Isabel Lucas (Immortals, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen). Both films are currently in pre-production and will shoot back-to-back in 2012. Sarah Green (Untitled Terrence Malick Project, The Tree of Life, The New World, Take Shelter, Mud) and Nicolas Gonda (Untitled Terrence Malick Project, The Tree of Life, The New World) will serve as the producers on both films with FilmNation Entertainment handling international sales during this week's AFM (

It sounds like these two could go hand-in-hand, like a musician saga involving the young and old, hence why Cate Blanchett and Christian Bale are both, but Gosling, Bennett and Lucas are the three odd ones. Plus, The Playlist says they're being described as "separate narratives", so don't assume they're too connected. We'll have to wait to find out more on their plots. "FilmNation couldn't be happier to continue to act as Terrence's international sales agency. Terrence is a brilliant filmmaker and an enormous draw for talent and filmmakers alike," said FilmNation's CEO Glen Basner. I'm just excited at the prospect of seeing three new Terrence Malick films over the next two years, though we still don't even know what any of them are about.

No comments on two new Terrence Malick projects with Christian Bale? What gives?! Both of these sound awesome, and I have no idea what they're about yet! I hope "Knight of Cups" is as badass as that title sounds, too.

can't comment much on the films, but look at who he is working with - Gosling, and Bale and Blanchett - twice! plus giving a boost to some younger talent, too. half as many films in 2 years as we've had in about 40?! mind you, knowing Malick, he'll be editing them for *years*. they may or may not end up being good, but just for the different feel and experience of watching a Malick film in the cinema, i'd be happy to walk in knowing only the director and those three names and *nothing* about the film(s).
