'First Day of School...Forever' Pretty Much 'Groundhog Day' for Kids

Last September we found out that Disturbia screenwriter Carl Ellsworth would be adapting R.L. Stine's signature young adult horror series Goosebumps for a feature film. Now another more recent work from the author is also headed to the big screen. Heat Vision reports Gotham Group has just option the rights to It's the First Day of School…Forever, the most recent book from Stine. For fans of the comedy Groundhog Day the premise will sound familiar as a 12-year old boy relives his first day of school over and over again. So what's the problem? That day just happened to be the worst day of this kid's entire life. More below!
The book doesn't hit shelves until July, but taking the premise and turning it into a film that could hit the same young crowd and families who seem to enjoy Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a safe bet. Combining horror and humor (what's happening on the book cover above?), the book is even described as Diary of a Wimpy Kid meets Groundhog Day, and that's pretty much all we need to know. It's not clear how fast the project might get off the ground, but I imagine it will take some time since the rights to the book were only just picked up today, and a studio won't be sought until after a writer is attached to adapt the book. Interested?
