The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists

Ahoy, mateys! A fantastic new first look at Aardman Animations upcoming movie The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists has been unveiled on HeyUGuys along with a press release announcing voice cast and more details. Aardman is the company behind Wallace & Gromit and Flushed Away and is working with Sony Pictures Animation this time for The Pirates!, a stop-motion 3D animated film based on Gideon Defoe's books. With another new Pirates of the Caribbean out in just a few weeks, pirates are definitely in, as this looks awesome. Hugh Grant will be voicing the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain. See him below!

The Pirates! In an Adventure with Scientists

Pirate Captain is a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to the much coveted Pirate Of The Year Award. It’s a quest that takes our heroes from the shores of exotic Blood Island to the foggy streets of Victorian London. Sounds fun. Co-directing the film is Peter Lord, of Chicken Run previously, and Jeff Newitt, from a script by Gideon Defoe. Sony will be bringing The Pirates! to theaters March 30th, 2012.

The clay modeling of that beard is more visually impressive than anything that Robert Zemeckis has produced over the last decade.
