AWARDS
Indie Spirit Awards 2012 Nominees, 'The Artist' & 'Take Shelter' Lead
by Alex Billington
November 29, 2011
The Independent Spirit Awards are an annual award given in the name of independent film, featuring plenty of those little indies which deserve the honor and recognition that they won't necessarily be receiving at the Oscars - though I hope not this time. The nominees for the 27th annual Film Indie Spirit Awards were announced today (via their website), and can be seen below. J.C. Chandor's Margin Call was selected to receive the annual Robert Altman Award, bestowed upon a film's director, casting director and its entire ensemble cast. The winners will be announced on February 25th, 2012 at the ceremony in Santa Monica.
You'll notice an [IMDb] (or trailer) link next to each film. This is so you can discover new films, because there is guaranteed to be at least one you've never heard of. Here is the complete list of 2012 nominees!

Michael Hazanavicius' The Artist and Jeff Nichols' Take Shelter, both fantastic films and two of my favorites this year, lead with five nominations each. Films receiving four noms are Mike Mills' Beginners, Nicolas Winding Refn's Drive, Alexander Payne's The Descendants and Sean Durkin's Martha Marcy May Marlene. These are some fine selections all around, great to see even Demian Bichir of A Better Life and writer Will Reiser of 50/50 getting some love. Seeing any of the films nominated is a good recommendation.
For last year's list of nominees and winners, which mostly include Black Swan and Winter's Bone picking up a few, click right here. A very big indie congratulations to all of this year's excellent nominees! Winners will be announced at the ceremony on Saturday, February 25th, 2012 held on the beach out in Santa Monica.
