Joss Whedon - The Avengers

Over a year ago, on April 13, we officially confirmed that fan-favorite Joss Whedon would be directing Marvel's long-awaited epic superhero team-up The Avengers, coming 2012. Well today, April 25th, 2011, marks the first day of shooting on The Avengers. It's finally happening - all those dreams you've had about seeing Iron Man team-up with Hulk and Thor and Captain America on the big screen - they're all about to come true. At least once this hits theaters next May. To kick off the first day, Whedon himself took to the website Whedonesque.com (via EW) to write a quick note about the huge adventure he is embarking upon.

Here is most of Joss Whedon's note, but as always, be sure to click to Whedonesque read the entire thing.

Hi Pumpkins, joss here.

Tomorrow we start shooting (I THINK I'm legally permitted to say that). Day one. That's right. We'll be shooting the pivotal death/betrayal/product placement/setting up the sequel/coming out scene, at the following address:

[Marvel Lawyers rush in, take Joss's keyboard, blowtorch a picture of his family like in "Stormy Monday", drink his milkshake, leave the seat up, fluff his pillows, violently unfluff his pillows, leave]

Went too far. My bad. Anyhoo, it should be a fun day, followed by the eighty thousand other fun days it will take to finish this. I'll be checking in from time to time, if there's news or I crave attention (i.e. am awake) . None of it will be Avengers news -- I have some very denty pillows to remind of that -- but I may have tidbits. (They're not about Firefly. I should say that up front, if only to protect Sis Mo from the HATORZ.)…

So wish me luck. DO IT! LUCK! NOW! I'm off to finish some Buffy pages, and then figure out what the movie is about already. I'm pretty sure it's about the Justice League [Marvel Lawyers re-enter, unspeakability occurs] or possibly something else. I'll get it. I've been looking forward to this. For about 46 years.

Catchphrase!

I've got to say, compared to Peter Jackson who has taken to Facebook to keep the fans updated about The Hobbit (also coming in 2012), Whedon isn't that great of a writer, I prefer Jackson's notes already. Should we be concerned that he re-wrote The Avengers script? Probably not, but there wasn't much I enjoyed reading in there. To be completely honest, I'm way more excited that this is even happening, that Marvel (and Disney) and everyone else has actually made an Avengers movie happen. We can only hope Justice League is next, right? We'll continue to keep you updated as production and the summer season begin, with Thor and Captain America coming up, too. Do you think Joss Whedon can pull off The Avengers?

Did Charlie Sheen write that? Those are the ramblings of a madman.

Many great men behind the camera are quite mad, or so it seems to the naked eye. Of course I am not ecstatic yet, but I can sense he is nervous, I mean it is his dream finally come true. I trust his talent and hope for a great summer event next year!

Cant wait, but, just like with TDKR, waiting sometimes is half the fun. Looking forward to stellar coverage from the FS crew and hopefully some news on viral sites! Love you guys!

He's being as self deprecating/self aware/jokey as he always has, and so far he's got a pretty good batting average in terms of quality.

Yea I know, and I know he's playing to the Firefly/Serenity/Buffy/Angel fans as well, but it's just too much... I almost stopped reading midway through because it was just like "come on Joss..." And this is the guy directing our beloved Avengers movie? Really hoping for the best.

Is it weird that I actually hoped for a not-too-serious, nerdy director to direct this? He's got that nerd passion. That geek strength. Should be interesting!

I know, I agree with you about that, this NEEDS a geeky director... but look at what Chris Nolan, the #1 non-geek, did with Batman. I don't want to see that world again with The Avengers, but I also don't want Avengers to be Buffy with superheroes. 😉

i wont say buffy with superheros is expected, but i would assume some dry humor and a great connection to the audience with whedon. whats the worst that can happen? i know the minute all are on screen together ill probably blow a gasket or 3....

I agree. I honestly cannot think of a better fit for that director seat in this case. Time will tell, and there will be flaws, but I bet it will be fun nonetheless.

I hope Loki will not be in 'The Avengers' and Hulk should not be a villain. They should include some of the following villains: Baron Zemo, Collector, Count Nefaria, Egghead, Grandmaster, Graviton, Grim Reaper, Immortus, Kang, Korvac, Legion of the Unliving , Lethal Legion, Master Pandemonium, Masters of Evil, Morgan le Fay, Nebula, Space Phantom. Super-Adaptoid. Supreme Intelligence, Squadron Sinister, Taskmaster, Thanos, Ultron, Zodiac

it will all turn out for the best. This is the guy who had a hand in writing Alien Resurrection after all. What can go wrong?

What the fuck is this idiot talking about... It's one of the most highly anticipated movies of all time, a major moment comes along with the first day of shooting, he has a great chance to get all the fans on his side and get everyone pumped..... and he comes out with this shit!! My God... it's so retarded, unfathomable! Peter Jackson is an example of how a director can build anticipation for a movie.

He is the worst director Marvel has chosen for such a massive project. Anything he touches bombs. Btw he wrote one geeky project that fanboys had any interest in, Alien Resurrection, which was a giant turd. I am 101% sure this will be the biggest disappointment of 2012 both critically and financially. Oh and btw Captain America will NOT get as good reviews as Thor. Joe Johnston is a mediocre director now. So expect mediocre reviews.
