It's Official: Shane Black Will Direct 'Iron Man 3' for Marvel Studios

Earlier this month we heard Lethal Weapon writer and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang director Shane Black was in contention to helm Marvel's Iron Man 3, the next installment in the lucrative comic book sequel. While his directing the project was far from a sure thing at the time, apparently Marvel likes what Black is bringing to the table and Deadline reports the filmmaker is currently in final negotiations to direct the blockbuster sequel. Though initially it was said that Black would also write the script, apparently the details remains to be confirmed. But considering how well Black worked with Robert Downey Jr. in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, I have high hopes.
Of course, there's a bit of a concern since the only film in Black's filmography is the aforementioned dark noir comedy, but Jon Favreau hadn't directed any action tentpoles either before taking on Iron Man. There's still no news on when Iron Man 3 may start production, and a release date isn't being set prematurely either, so it's unclear how soon Black will begin working for Marvel. Right now he's working on Doc Savage for Sony and he was recently linked to an American adaptation of the Japanese manga series Death Note. Even with those projects in line, this will undoubtedly be Black's biggest project to date. Are you happy to have Shane Black on Iron Man 3?

I was under the impression that Marvel railroaded Favreau into making Iron Man 2 "their way." Which is why Iron Man 2 sucked. Incidentally, that happens to be the reason why The Hulk, X3, and Wolverine blew a**. Anything that carries Marvel' stamp is in danger of being sabotaged by the studio.

Amen..... I was thinking there HAD to be a reason why Fav's wadn't directing, just on revenue alone. Hopefully it doesn't get worse. Never thought I'd finding myself wishing for the "good o'l days" of marvel so soon but it seems (to me) that the first 2 Blade's, X2, Spidey 2 and Ironman are the gold standard.

Neither of you know what you are talking about. Marvel as a movie studio had nothing to do with X3, Wolverine, nor any of the Blade films or Spiderman films. They took over to make The Hulk, Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers themselves.

I agree. The Hulk SUCKED! The Incredible Hulk was great. Ed Norton did a great job taking on the script chores and not wanting credit. Ya see how Marvel did him, right? Wolverine was okay to me but he wasn't savage enough. I still liked X3. It was fine to me except the end when 5-6 x-men took on an army of bad guys, while the MAIN bad guys just looked on.

I totally agree with everything you stated. Iron Man 2 was a horrible sequal, and I hope they also bring back Terrance Howard as Rhodey. Shane Black is an awesome writer. Lethal Weapon 1 & 2 were great and I really enjoyed Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I think He and Downey will deliever a great film. They really should cast Val Kilmer in this. He and Downey were great together in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

I thought Iron Man 2 was fine but it almost felt like Marvel put there two cents in and that's why Favreau left. Norton said the same thing. Marvel does havecontrol but they WANT certain things in their movies. Sam Raimi has said the same thing about Marvel. “They really gave me a tremendous amount of control on the first two films, actually. But then there were different opinions on the third film and I didn’t really have creative control, so to speak.”

This is a kick-ass start! I'm sure Black will bring his A-game to this 3rd flick like Favreau did for the 1st, "Iron Man"!

Still disappointed that Favreau isn't returning, but Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is one of my favorite movies.

I'd rather see Shane put his talents to an original piece of work than a third Iron man. It's been years since the freshness of Kiss, Kiss.
