It's Official: Tom Cruise will Belt 80's Tunes in 'Rock of Ages' Musical

After circling the role for months now, THR finally has word that Tom Cruise in finalizing his deal to star in Adam Shankman's adaptation of Rock of Ages, the Broadway musical full of 80's rock tunes. Though I wouldn't expect a rehashing of his classic lip syncing performance of Old Time Rock and Roll from Risky Business, Cruise will get to rock out with the Bon Jovi ballad Wanted: Dead or Alive. Though question still remains how well the actor can carry a tune, this is exactly the role that I love seeing Cruise take on. After seeing him with beefy arms and a balding head as Les Grossman, I can't wait to see him with 80's rock hair.
Cruise will be a true 80's rocker by playing Stacee Jaxx, an arrogant yet charming rock star at the top of his career. As for the rest of the cast, we've heard Russell Brand and Alec Baldwin were both circling roles for the musical adaptation, but their deals are not yet finalized. Gwyneth Paltrow (who has had some musical fun on "Glee" recently) was also mentioned for a part, but we haven't heard any development on that deal. Sure the cast sounds impressive, but the soundtrack is the star in this musical with tunes coming from Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Steve Perry, Poison and Asia. This sounds like an insanely fun musical that college kids everywhere can sing along to in their university bars. What do you think?

Sort of like Glee, but with soft rock? At least the saggy old rock singers will get some royalties. Glee ruined music forever.

The Broadway show is hysterical, and this movie should be a riot - especially if they get Alec Baldwin!

I'm still a Cruise fan, the guy was in Jerry Maguire, The Last Samurai, and Minority Report. So this is decent news for me.
