Jean-Claude Van Damme Returning to Action Genre with 'Six Bullets'

Jean-Claude Van Damme

If you listened closely, you heard his voice in last month's release of Kung Fu Panda 2, but now it looks like Jean-Claude Van Damme will return to some live-action ass-kicking very soon. His last venture on film poked fun at himself in the form of JCVD, but now the longtime action star is getting back into his old groove with Six Bullets. Ernie Barbarash will direct the film which follows an ex-mercenary kidnapping expert hired by a martial arts fighter whose daughter has gone missing. Obviously this sounds right up Van Damme's alley, but I can't help but wish that after JCVD, he might try something different.

Variety says Chad and Evan Law (The Hit List) wrote the script which reunites Barbarash, Van Damme and producer Brad Krevoy who apparently collaborated on a project called Assassination Games which was just picked up by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions (though we're not sure when we'll see that get released). Though it would be great to see Van Damme return to his former bad-ass glory, I think the action genre has changed a bit too much to allow for a star like him to flourish. Sure he'll always have his loyal fans, but The Expendables didn't really do much for me, and if the stories are going to keep being this generic, then my attention span will remain short.

But Van Damme did 2 action movies after JCVD so it's no strange that he will do another 🙂

Perhaps they refer to a theatrical release. JCVD was that (at least abroad). Also, while he (and Dolph Lundgren) had top billing in Universal Sodier Regeneration, it could be argued that they were more in supporting roles.

Maybe now he can get off his high horse and be in Expendables 2.

Although, I doubt this flick will have a theatrical release(albeit a limited run), I am glad to see Van Damme getting more press than he's had in the last few years. I would like to have confirmation on his rumored, "The Expendables 2", role that his friend Sheldon Lettich mentioned about 2 month's ago! It would KICK ASS, if Van Damme actually signs on!

At first glance, sounds like the type of character he turned down in the expendables... Hopefully this project will give him the itch to be in Expendables 2.  😉

He's already filming an action movie with Scott Adkins that should be out sometime later this year...

JCVD was it for me. I'm done. Why his agent has allowed him to fall back on this again is beyond me but then again maybe he knows that was a one shot deal. Sad.
