Hunger Games

As a whole slew of the most coveted young actors in Hollywood like Shia LaBeouf and many more are in contention to lead The Bourne Legacy, there's another coveted role for even younger female actresses. EW reports that as of now, about 30 actress have either read or had meetings about taking the challenging lead role of Katniss Everdeen in Lionsgate's adaptation of The Hunger Games from director Gary Ross. Since the role requires some serious acting chops names like Abigail Breslin (Zombieland), Chloë Moretz (Let Me In), and Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones) are unsurprisingly in the running. But there's even more!

In addition, recently popular young Oscar nominated talents like Jennifer Lawrence (Winter's Bone) and Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) are also in the running for the role, as expected after those accolades. Other popular young actresses include Emma Roberts (Lymelife, Scream 4) and Emily Browning (from Sucker Punch). But aside from name talents, there's also lesser known actresses like Lyndsy Fonseca (Kick-Ass), Kaya Scodelario (UK's "Skins") and Shailene Woodley ("The Secret Life of the American Teenager").

If you're unfamiliar with the very popular series of books, here's the official synopsis for the first:

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the districts in line by forcing them all to send one boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and eighteen to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight to the death on live TV. Sixteen year-old Katniss Everdeen regards it as a death sentence when she steps forward to take her sister's place in the Games. But Katniss has been close to dead before and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Depending on how this turns out, whoever takes the role in Hunger Games will also likely take on Catching Fire and Mockingjay, the other two installments of the book series that could be turned into moves as well. The age range here is rather significant from 14-year old Steinfeld up to 24-year old Fonseca. Personally, my vote is for Lawrence, simply because I'm looking forward to anything she has on tap for the future. Of course there are probably plenty more names in the running, so one of these young ladies may not even get the role. We'll do our best to keep you posted. Do you guys like any of these names for The Hunger Games?

As a fan of the books, and of movies, I love Haillee Steinfeld for Katniss. Jennifer Lawrence was my pick for best actress last year so i'd love to see her in Hunger Games, maybe as the older blonde competitor, but not as Katniss.

Happygerbaloon on Mar 3, 2011

hailee is too young. she just turned fourteen, filming starts in may. katniss is sixteen i do not want her as katniss tbh.

Anonymous on Mar 9, 2011

lyndsy fonsecca or chloe moretz because they were in kick ass, but mostly lyndsy cuz she's one beautiful girl

max s. on Mar 3, 2011

If not Steinfeld then I'd agree Moretz, even though Kick-Ass was awful, Moretz was certainly entertaining, and she's been great in everything else she has been in.

Happygerbaloon on Mar 4, 2011

Definitely Hailee. Can't see any of the other mentioned actresses fitting the bill quite so well.

Ali on Mar 3, 2011

just hope they dont mess up the book too much. like some of this other movies based on books

Pinoi21 on Mar 3, 2011

jennifer lawrence looks absolutely nothing like the character Katniss is 16 years old for starters has grey eyes, olive toned skin, and black hair and has a malnourished physique literally the complete opposite of jen Hallie Stienfeld all the way she actually looks like the character

p86 on Mar 3, 2011

Any of the actresses mentioned would be excellent in this.

If they can manage to get Saoirse Ronan...they need to CAST HER.

Blair on Mar 4, 2011

i agree with casting Ronan

matt on Mar 8, 2011

I would really like to see Hailee in this. I like Jenifer Lawrence and all but she looks nothing like the character and she's too old to play her.

Gaby on Mar 4, 2011

I would be happy with either Haillee Steinfeld or Jennifer Lawrence playing Katniss

Duck on Mar 4, 2011

If we're going by the books, Hailee Steinfeld is very nearly perfect. Jennifer Lawrence would be an incredible Glimmer (from District 1). However, they're probably going to go with an actress older than Steinfeld (unfortunately, since Katniss is only supposed to be 16 - the whole point of the hunger games is that only teenagers compete).

Emma on Mar 4, 2011

I'm excited to see some Tracker Jackers.

Jace on Mar 4, 2011

Hailee Steinfeld is way too young for the role. Katniss sleeps with Peeta and makes out with Gale and Peeta. Haley Farris is perfect for the role of Katniss. She has grey/green eyes, tough, mature, voice skills, and small. Peeta should be Logan Lerman, Gale- Chord Overstreet or Alex Petyfer.

mandefilmcritic on Mar 4, 2011

she does not "sleep" with peeta...also remember, this is set in dystopian future..not that everything goes but values definitely differ than present day reality..

Abc on Mar 4, 2011

Actually, she does sleep with him. They sleep together many times in the book. Not have sex. But they sleep together. And so what if values differ? Hailee just turned fourteen. Katniss is sixteen, she is too young for the role.

Anonymous on Mar 9, 2011

She doesn't "sleep" with Peeta, she sleeps with Peeta. No sex involved. And she doesn't make out with Gale, she kisses him once. She doesn't even really "make out" with Peeta, they kiss a lot, but it's not technically making out. And Haley Farris is nothing like Katniss. She's BLOND, for god's sake. Hailee Steinfeld FTW! See my comment below for WHY she would be good.

Izballerina13 on Mar 10, 2011

Hailee Steinfeld all the way. She has the looks, acting ability, she is confident yet vulnerable....Lawrence is too old, too curvy, just doesn't fit as Katniss.

Steph on Mar 4, 2011

I will go apeshit if they pick anyone other than Hailee Steinfeld. And don't even say she's too young! She'll be 16 by the time they get around to making this movie. Or at least latter part of 15. I want her to be Katniss so bad D:

fem!anon on Mar 4, 2011

they're filming in may.

Anonymous on Mar 9, 2011

Steinfeld's appearance is ideal for the part. I wouldn't guess she was as young as 14. Nonetheless she is 14 and some of those scenes with Peeta in the cave will be cringe inducing with an actor much older. Lawrence is a great actress but looks wise is very different from the appearance of the character in the book. They should try the Harry Potter approach and unearth some undiscovered talent for this film.

Cioran on Mar 4, 2011

Hailee Steinfeld would be perfect!

Candace on Mar 4, 2011

Yeah, I enjoyed this the first time I read and watched it when it was called "Battle Royale."

unoriginality on Mar 4, 2011

It's actually pretty different from Battle Royale, if you've read the books. -Ri

Ri on Mar 4, 2011

Yeah when i first picked it up i thought it would just be Americanized Battle Royale, but after reading both books and seeing the BR movie years ago, they are totally different. Similar idea but very different use of the idea.

Happygerbaloon on Mar 4, 2011

Speaking as someone who loves both of those books (Watched Battle Royale...the awful movie version...again for laughs yesterday). Battle Royale is feels more real and gory, and gives you that haunting horror factor at the end that makes you think "Wow, could that really happen?" The Hunger Games is still creepy, but its more subtle so that everyone can enjoy it. It also has a story line that strays outside of the books. Both are amazing books, though.

I really hope they get someone new. I really don't see these people as Katniss, ESPECIALLY Abigail Breslin, Chloe Moritz, Saoirse Ronan, Shailene Woodley, and Emma Roberts. I'm not saying they're bad actors, but they're definitely NOT for Katniss, at all. Hailee Steinfeld, while I loved True Grit and admire her, isn't either. She's much too young looking, there's something about her face that is too soft for Katniss's character. She's just not how I imagined her at all. Lyndsy Fonesca is too old to play her, and also isn't how I imagined her. Jennifer Lawrence, Emily Browning, and Kaya Scodelario are a bit better, but still. Jennifer Lawrence should definitely be in the movie, but not as Katniss. I think a lesser known actress would be best. They shouldn't choose based off of who's "popular" right now; they should really work at getting the right person. And if they believe Abigail Breslin is that person, I don't know if I can see the film, despite how much of a fan I am. -Ri

Kenzie on Mar 4, 2011

As a major fan of these books, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD - Chloe Moretz - PLEASE!

Teacherkid on Mar 4, 2011

Kaya is definitely the best choice...she looks soo much like katniss and I think she will be able to pull it off successfully.Hailee is a bit too young for the role and does not match the looks of katniss. So its Kaya aaaalll the way!!!!

Anthi_tsa on Mar 9, 2011

Definitely Hailee Steinfeld. She looks exactly how I imagined Katniss from the books, AND she can act. Jennifer Lawrence looks absolutely nothing like the character, like some of the other contestants. Hailee looks about 15, not 14, so with a little makeup they can make her look 16. It's not that hard. PLus, Katniss is SUPPOSED to be small. I definitely think she's the right one for the job. I don't think they should use the same actresses over and over again (Abigail Breslin, Chloe Moritz, Saoirse Ronan, Shailene Woodley, and Emma Roberts). They need some new faces on the big screen, for real. I'm so sick of seeing the same people. So I think that they shouldn't re-use actresses too many times. And also, they DEFINITELY cannot use a blond. Seriously, I'm so sick of this damn hair color thing. Katniss can't be Katniss without her long BROWN hair in a bun. OR, they could always use a totally new and undiscovered actress, like the girl here: She's great 🙂

Izballerina13 on Mar 10, 2011

its called hair dye. The girl in that clip is wearing a wig to cover her BLONDE hair FYI 🙂

Anonymous on Mar 12, 2011

I realize that... I was just using her (Danielle Chuchran) as an example... I really think that the movie business needs to find some new actors and actresses for the Hunger Games. Someone who really fits the part. They shouldn't try and make it the next Twilight. They should try and make it the next Harry Potter instead. 🙂

Izballerina13 on Mar 12, 2011

Oops, just realized I put bun instead of braid. Katniss can't be Katniss without her long brown hair in a BRAID.

Izballerina13 on Mar 12, 2011

I like Jennifer but she doesn't resemble Katniss at ALL. Hailee is the most resembling actress to play Katniss and based on interviews she's done she is mature enough to take on this role. I think either lyndsy fonsecca or Emily Browning would be good in this role as well.

Ali on Mar 13, 2011

Hailee as Katniss all the waaayy !, She's perfect for the role and Noo please dont cast Jennifer i mean this is likke 12-18 years old fighting to death not non-kids even if Jennifer dye's her hair she'll look older than she is , she already does . And Callan Mcauliffe (Who's 16 yrs old) should be cast as Peeta, Soo it wont look likke Hailee is kissing some old dude . If Hailee does get cast .

Clare on Mar 15, 2011

Some people may not know this person but i think brianna finseth would be perfect for the part. she looks ALOT older then she is and she is athletic and she is the same hight as Katniss 5'4. she hunts, she is good with a bow and arrow and she looks like Katniss excpt for the few flaws that her name isn't Katniss and her eyes are a blue not a gray. other then that, that girl is a perfect fit for Katniss. she isn't very curve, she loves action and she is a hunter, 100% of the way. i think they should choose a girl that hasn't been discovered yet because it would give people outside of the film groups a chance to show that they are good actors and they can give this part the edge it needs. a picture of her is attached to this comment.

Brianna Finseth on Nov 14, 2011

you do realize that the movie is coming out in four months, right? they chose a LONG time ago. and "a lot" is not "alot". just saying.

Isabel on Nov 14, 2011

and that girl looks nothing like katniss. katniss is 16. she looks about 11 or 12.
