Jeremy Renner to Star in Rally Racing Film 'Slingshot' for Paramount

What does Hawkeye do in his off-time? Apparently he's a rally racer. Variety reports that Jeremy Renner, the actor starring as Hawkeye in The Avengers as well as the new Bourne movie coming up, has made a deal with Paramount to produce and star in a project called Slingshot. The film will tell the true story of Bill Caswell, an unemployed racing freak who famously bought a $500 BMW jalopy off Craigslist and used it to beat $400,000-plus rally cars in the Mexican leg of the World Rally Championships. Renner and Don Handfield will produce at their production company The Combine. Handfield will also write the screenplay.
Caswell went up against pro teams in the Mexican event in a 1991 BMW 318i. Formerly a finance banker, Caswell left his job in 2009 to focus on rally racing in cars that he built, modified and fabricated himself -- and gained recognition by placing third in the Rally America class of Rally Mexico. You can read more about his complete story on Jalopnik. Interesting to see Renner lining up other side projects like this in addition to all of his major roles coming up. The Combine is also developing a biopic on Steven McQueen, which Renner will also produce. No word on how soon we'll see either film, but we'll be sure to keep you updated.

This was just an awesome story to follow while it was happening - too bad about the following (unsuccessful) transformation into a baja racer. so psyched to see what hijinks he can get up to with the money from a movie deal.
