Jodie Foster's Next Directing Gig Could Possibly Be a Sci-Fi Thriller?

Though she hadn't directed a film since the 1995 Christmas comedy Home for the Holidays, the buzz from South by Southwest has Jodie Foster and her most recent directorial endeavor, the anticipated comedic drama The Beaver, getting plenty of praise (read Jeremy's review right here). She previously tackled drama with Little Man Tate and comedy with the aforementioned Christmas comedy, and combined the two rather well with a supposedly fantastic, comeback worthy performance from Mel Gibson. Now it sounds like Foster might next be in the director's chair for a sci-fi thriller that is in the early stages of development.
Though she was scant with the details, here's what Foster told Hero Complex about the project:
“There’s a family element to it, but it’s much more a genre movie. I’d like to do that ’cause that’s a world I live in as an actor but I’ve never really gone to as a director. I’d still have to have all the other stuff in a film. It can’t just be, ‘There’s a bad guy, there’s a monster.’ It has to have all the other stuff too.”
However, it doesn't sound like this is a project we'll see anytime soon.“It’s not anywhere close to being ready. I don’t write. I rewrite, but I don’t write, so that always puts me at the mercy of some enormous talent that comes out of the woodwork that somehow has the same obsessions as me.” Still, it would be nice to see what Foster can do with a story set in the sci-fi genre. If it's anything like Contact (as far as the personal story set in the midst of science fiction), a personal favorite of mine from Foster's acting career, then I'll definitely be on board. How about you?
