Johnny Depp & 'The Lone Ranger' Coming But Not Until May 31, 2013

Though surprising news came back in August that Disney had halted production on their big budget adaptation of The Lone Ranger starring Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as the titular hero and Johnny Depp as his sidekick Tonto, it sounded like the project might actually get back on track with a lower budget that included new deals for Johnny Depp, director Gore Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer. That deal was made official earlier this week, but now the production delay means the film won't meet its original December 2012 release date, and will instead hit May 31st, 2013, for the summer.
THR has the report which says Depp, Verbinski and Bruckheimer are all taking a smaller paycheck to get this film off the ground, and the filmmakers may even sacrifice their back-end participation if the film comes in over budget (which could very likely happen). In addition, this release date shuffle has forced Disney to move around another summer tentpole. Thor 2 was originally schedule to hit theaters on July 26th, 2013 but it will now be pushed back until November 15th, 2013. That makes the summer of 2013 a little less comic book packed, but Iron Man 3 is still slated to hit in May of the same year, so it's all good.
