Karl Urban & Ben Barnes Join the Cast of Antonio Negret's 'Overdrive'
It's THR with the casting scoop on Karl Urban (Star Trek) and Ben Barnes (Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian) joining the cast of Overdrive, from director Antonio Negret (the upcoming Transit starring Jim Caviezel) and writers Derek Haas and Michael Brandt (2 Fast 2 Furious, Wanted). With those writers and the same director uniting, a testosterone-filled torque-fueled film about two high profile car thieves who run into trouble with a crime boss in France seems all too appropriate. Urban and Barnes will play the siblings, and apparently beat out Alex Pettyfer, Matthew Goode and Garrett Hedlund for the roles.
A ten day trip to France for something called France: Unlimited Access (an outreach program of sorts put on by the French government to wine and dine Hollywood scribes with hopes of influencing them to set more films in the country) inspired Haas and Brandt to write a heist flick based on the locales Marseilles has to offer. They took the $30 million film to 20th Century Fox, who passed on it, which is where Taken director and now Overdrive producer (and fellow Frenchman) Pierre Morel came in and has now put the project together with some talent who will really bring the action to the City of Lights. William Morris Endeavor Entertainment holds the domestic distribution rights to the film and filming begins this weekend in France.
