May the odds be ever in Lionsgate's favor… Yep, the first sequel is already in the works. While Gary Ross finishes up the last few months of post-production on The Hunger Games (watch the trailer) due out next March, Deadline is reporting that Lionsgate is "courting" writer Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours) to work on the script for the sequel, Catching Fire. Ross is returning and wanted to work on the script with author Suzanne Collins, behind the book series this is based on, but of course is completely out of time and they want to get this sequel setup and ready as soon as the first one is being released. Read on!
The Hunger Games series is three books long, following up with Catching Fire and Mockingjay. Deadline says there is no start date on the sequel, but it's obviously a high priority for the studio, and they're pushing hard to get Beaufoy though he's not yet in negotiations. Simon Beaufoy is the Oscar winning English screenwriter behind Among Giants, The Full Monty, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Slumdog Millionaire and 127 Hours, and also wrote the Salmon Fishing in the Yemen adaptation. This is an interesting series for him to get involved with, but if he can put an edge on this, then it's in good hands. I'm still hoping the first one turns out good. Jennifer Lawrence stars as Katniss and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta from District 12.
