In an announcement that comes out of nowhere, Variety is reporting that indie film production company Nu Image/Millennium Films has quietly assembled a new comedy called Straight A's that started production today. In a film that will likely end up on the festival circuit next year, Ryan Phillippe stars as a man who's been in and out of rehab for 10 years and is haunted by the ghost of his dead mother pressing him to return home to the family he turned his back. Outfitted with only a bag of pills and a sack of weed, he returns to Shreveport, only to deal with his brother's wife, who's still pining for him, her first love.
Luke Wilson will play Phillippe's brother while Anna Paquin will play his wife looking to reconnect with the rehabilitated Phillippe. Wonderland director James Cox will work from a script by Dave Cole which hopefully delivers more than your average quirky comedy that hits festivals and ends up forgotten in a straight-to-DVD release. Wilson has been rather low key on screen lately, but he's been busy shooting the series "Enlightened" which will hit HBO sometime soon. His turn in the indie Henry Poole is Here was relatively impressive, so maybe he can deliver more of the same this time around.
