Mark Wahlberg Says a Sequel to 'The Fighter' Might Be on the Way

Though it may not have taken home Best Picture at the Oscars last weekend, Christian Bale and Melissa Leo each won for their supporting performances in The Fighter and the film has generated quite a lot of buzz. Apparently the film has been so successful that an unlikely sequel may be on the way. Before the Academy Awards even started, Extra had a chance to catch-up with the film's star and producer Mark Wahlberg where he revealed that they're considering a sequel to the boxing drama. It's not as if we have another Rocky franchise on our hands, but the prospect of revisiting Mickey Ward and his family is certainly enticing.
So what would the sequel focus on? Wahlberg said, "We're gonna talk about doing No. 2. We're gonna do the Ward /Gatti trilogy and make it real." When he mentions the Ward/Gatti trilogy, he's not talking about three more films, but rather the trio of fights where Mickey Ward fought Arturo Gatti and ultimately emerged as the champion. If I recall correctly the end of the film references Ward's continued success and infamous fights with Gatti, so I don't think this sequel had always been in the cards before the movie became a hit.
Honestly, it doesn't seem like it's all that necessary, but if a sequel really does get off the ground, they better bring back the entire cast. The family dynamic between Mickey, his mother (Leo) and all of his sisters is what made the drama so compelling and made The Fighter much more than another sports drama. But if the sequel aims to focus more on the boxing and less on the family drama, I'm not sure the same kind of magic will be there. In addition, since it's so early in development, I doubt any of the cast is signed for it. Plus, David O. Russell has plenty of projects in his future to keep him busy. Right now it sounds like a decent idea, but we'll see what happens in the future. Would you see a sequel to The Fighter?

I call BS, Bale wouldn't suffer that transformation again for a role that has just given him the oscar.

If Bale did a role like this another couple of times, his body's never gonna recover. I'm actually a little scared for him. Even tho he's probably the only one who can pull it off

Yes but his transformation for The Machinist was way more Dramatic and would no doubt be serious to his health if he did another couple of roles like this!

BEEP!!! WRONG!!!... it's at least his third time dropping dozens of pounds for a role. The Fighter, The Machinist, and Rescue Dawn I know for sure; and I think he might've lost weight for Empire of the Sun back when he was a kid.

Ward got beat by Gatti twice and retired, he did not ultimately emerge as champion...might want to edit that.

I do not want to see Wards sisters in 3-D, so, no, I don't want a sequel.

Now again with the sequels.... A win does not necessarily mean people want to see it again. That what separates the Nolans from the others Regardless of his movies wins, he would never have done one
