Milla Jovovich & Paul W.S. Anderson Back for Another 'Resident Evil'

Paul W.S. Anderson and Milla Jovovich

Back in September, almost immediately after the release of Resident Evil: Afterlife 3D, franchise star Milla Jovovich seemed confident that she and her husband and the film's director Paul W.S. Anderson would be back for a fourth sequel in the franchise. Since then we haven't heard any official development, but now Bloody-Disgusting is reporting that Jovovich and Anderson will be returning for the sequel title Resident Evil: Retribution. Anderson will be directing the film from his own screenplay this time around too, and while story details are being kept under wraps, we do have word on some characters involved. Read on!

As far as the story goes, it will apparently take Alice (Milla Jovovich) from Toronto, Canada to Tokyo, Japan. In addition Jill Valentine will be returning to the franchise, and despite a tweet from actress Sienna Guillory confirming her return, Bloody Disgusting apparently says the role will be recast. Joining the two ladies will be Barry Burton, a member of S.T.A.R.S. (Special Tactics And Rescue Service) and Leon Scott Kennedy, a U.S. Government agent, and previously an officer for the Raccoon City Police Department.

Interestingly enough, when Jovovich talked about the sequel last September, she said: "We've been talking to a lot of fans on Twitter and stuff, so it's probably going to be one of the first movies where we really talk to fans to see what they want, and what characters they want to see. It's going to be a more interactive process." It's not clear if that process will result in anything substantial on screen, but suggestions from fans can't be any worse than what Anderson has already delivered in the franchise. Here's hoping the film at least stays away from 3D this time around, which was used in such silly ways in the last installment. Otherwise, I'm not really looking forward to the fifth film, but it will be hitting theaters on September 14th, 2012.

i didn have much expectation from Afterlife, but being a Big fan of the first movie, made me watch the rest of the series...but each movie got more worse than its predecessor ...and afterlife is the worst of the lot with its crappy CGI.... For a movie based on Resident Evil the game, this series has close to Nothing to do with it other than names of towns and characters ... The current series has got stuck with Alice and is using the real charaters such as Claire,Chris,Jill and next Leon as secondary characters when inn fact they must have the main roles... A reboot of this mess is needed..Hopefully not with Alice and her superpowers, just the simple characters from the game...

You called it the "fifth sequel" and the "forth film". T'is the other way around, not that anyone is keeping count.  Seriously, who is going to see these movies? There has to be a fan base for them to justify spending the money, but I just don't get it

This franchise gives me a case of the "saw" matter how much I know they're gonna suck, I still have to see 'em.

At this rate ther is more movies than games. Please stop. I cant like Milla because of this franchise.

1. I get why people might be critical. 2. I do not agree at all. I love this franchise. 3. I have not played the games though, that may have something to do with it. 4. I love the build of the story lines, the epic nature of the story being told. 5. I really enjoy Milla in this role and love that she has stuck to it. 6. the Fact that I love the movies does not mean that I think it's oscar material. It's a fun serial horror story that get's movie treatment starring a great actress that "gets" the role and action movies. 7. I only ask that the movie never get's into the "status Quo" type of storytelling. I love that the beginning of the "next movie" is directly affected by the end of the last. That there is progress in plot points. 8. My only criticism (for this blog) is that "kill them all 1 by 1 til only Milla is left" not be main "meat" of the movie. For a horror movie, I know that's easier said than done. 9. I hope "interactive" doesn't turn into terrible. Tell the story, that's what I like the most. s'ry if I repeated

i happen to like these movies. i look forward to seeing the next one.

Oh god, can't anyone stop those two. Resident Evil has been butchered enough, don't you think. I think they have done so much that no one can ever again touch the subject matter.

Don't know why I didn't know Milla is married to W.S. Anderson. This explains alot about this franchise. I stopped watching this franchise after the 3rd film. I really liked the first one and I guess thats why I bothered watching the next two. This has got to be the worst"horror" franchise ever. It blows my mind that people still go watch this crap. Nevermind that none if these movies follow the awesome game story, these films are some if the cheesiest, dumb, nonsensical pieces of horse turds ever put together posing as "horror action" movies. I dont look for academy award winning films here but these movies are not even entertaining. I admire Milla for bring hot and standing by her crappy director man.

Hopefully its better than the last piece of shit that came out.

WTF, get rid of the Sienna Guillory who’s hottest actor in the whole series. I’m sure Milla had something to do with it since she looked jealous in the behind the scenes of part 2. Paul W.S. Anderson is nothing but Milla Jovovich’s b%*tch. Congratulations Anderson, you’ve shown everyone how a tool like yourself acts in a relationship. Not only that you don’t care about bringing in the box office dollars since Sienna Guillory is the most popular in the franchise. Oh and what the hell was up with the last one.  It had zero character development.

Someone needs to take this away from Anderson and either kill or reboot this entire, awful, ridiculous franchise.  I know the video games had some really bad writing, particularly in dialogue, but the basic premise was really cool.  If someone were to stick with the source material without taking liberties and flesh out some smart, sympathetic characters instead of stocking the story with a bunch of brainless turds who are obviously unsuited to survive a zombie outbreak, then we might actually get a scary, zombie/survival horror, conspiracy movie that's just as enjoyable to watch as the games are to play. One of the best parts of the first game was the fact of this group of cops going into this mansion not knowing what the hell was going on, and slowly uncovering the evidence of the company's failed experiments in bioweapons. And what the hell is up with Jovovich?  She used to act in good movies.  It once looked like she might be going somewhere, but now, she's doing the same old thing over and over.  Must be easy money, right?

The third film in the series was great.. hopefully its more like that one..

Oh no, Anderson's Making another!!! I wonder What he's gonna copy from the NEW GAME!!!!!!!!?? Oh wait, There is no New game unless he plans on stealing From Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City.  Yep, that will probably happen, now that he's including Leon, He's gonna bring in some Stupid ass Umbrella Assassination Team to kill Leon. Even know we are way Past Raccoon City I'm sure he'll find a way to make it work.  You know, I was hoping they would have brought Leon in Waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy Earlier and That Jensen Ackles could Snag the role but now I just hope he Stays fffffffaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrrrr away from this, He's to good of an actor to be drug into this shitty excuse for a Game to Film Adaptation. I can't even begin to Describe how disgusted I was with what he did to Chris, Claire and even Wesker. ' The first one was the best but even it was Mediocre, it showed some promise that maybe this story could go somewhere but that didn't last to long.  I get irritated every time someone has the nerve to say that this shit is Horror. The movies have took the Horror Element completely out of this series and replaced it with Action, Action and what do you know?! Even more Action. I know the Game has switched to a more fast Paced action shooter but even it still retains the Horror Element.  I guess I can say they got one thing right, at least the movies managed to keep the zombies unlike the games. Little does those dipshits at Capcom know that Zombie Games are all the rage now. Idiots! Idiots!

I've seen low budget gore films in japan that had more character development than resident evil...

They should just rename the movie I Am Alice: Watch Me in Action for 95 Minutes Don't Worry I Always Come Out Alive.

ocnj179 on Aug 11, 2011

lol. Perhaps they could shorten it to "Alice in Chunder-land"?

JL on Aug 11, 2011

I'm glad they're at least bringing Leon in. He's my favorite RE character.  I actually wish they'd scrap the idea of Alice altogether and reboot the franchise focusing on Leon. Preferably with a new screenwriter, and possibly a new director, too.

Craig on Aug 11, 2011

Me and a friend wrote a script each for the first film in the reboot. We're currently mixing them together to create one whole script. So Paul better be quick because we're heading to Capcom in September this year.
