'Monsters' Director Gareth Edwards Helming Legendary's 'Godzilla'
Now this is an interesting choice! Heat Vision reports that Legendary Pictures has chosen breakout British director Gareth Edwards to direct their upcoming Godzilla movie that has been teased before, like with fire-breathing shirts at Comic-Con. Warner Bros will co-produce, co-finance and distribute per its deal with Legendary. Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni are producing along with Dan Lin, Roy Lee, and Brian Rogers. The article explains that execs took an interest in him after being impressed by his work on the low-budget sci-fi flick Monsters, which we raved about too. He'll also "develop" with a new writer. A big congrats to Gareth!
Edwards is a very interesting choice to helm a high profile, presumably high budget monster movie project like this, especially for his second feature film. But then again, he is a filmmaker who has a lot of talent and is on the verge of breaking out even bigger, so let him take on something big like this and see what happens. Either way, this is bound to turn out better than Roland Emmerich's Godzilla from 1998, that's for sure. If you want a better perspective on Edwards, you can watch our video interview with him here or listen to our Golden Briefcase episode that he was on. Legendary picked up rights from Japan's Toho Co. March last year.

Well, i can see why this is an inspired choice on Legendary Picture's side however if a director repeat a film in the same genre it doesn't always mean success. So, I'm skeptical to the potential this flick has but I'm all for Gareth. He could be a talent to be reckoned with.

ooh...this is a great idea!

woohooo!!!! Make us Godzilla fans forget all about that horrid 1998 film.... Cloverfield meets The Walking Dead please!

Monsters did good on what it had to work with - budget wise - and although the concept was great, it was executed poorly. It had its moments, but overall the film was boring. Too much talking and not enough action. If I go see a movie called "Monsters" I don't want a love story, I want monsters. So let's hope this has a great mix of characters and action.

say it aint so....why the hell would anyone spend a dime on this??? its almost like some drunk who keeps telling the same bad joke over and over and over.....

Monsters was the worst movie of 2010. period. Just cause you wave a tentacle in one scene does not qualify you to make a godzilla film. I can only hope Garth gets brain worms or something that would stop him from ruining godzilla. please baby jesus... brain worms...

Indeed this is good news; I hope Gareth Edwards does a fantastic job making a big budget Godzilla movie. If I’m correct this is his first big budget movie and if it succeeds he will be known for making every Godzilla fan happy!

i only hope if they do another Godzilla movie, they don't repeat the 98 crap. a few tips: - Godzilla CAN'T be destroid by humans weapons (missiles, bombs, bullets, etc.) - Godzilla is a guy! - Godzilla has to use his atomic breath - the main character is GODZILLA - Godzilla has to fight with another moster - Godzilla can't be less than 334 feet

another movie from boring director: gareth edwards, master of boring and dark movies!
Smartpandora on Jan 5, 2011
you DO know that his ONLY other film was about as low budget as you can get and he himself wrote, directed and did the cinematography and visual effects HIMSELF for the film, right? so when you say "movies" you mean MOVIE (singular) and when you say "boring" you mean not bogged down by overly dramatic special effects and typical hollywood b.s., yea? let me guess, you're a big Roland Emmerich fan, huh? yea...

His movie was so damned boring and slow it felt like sitting through MOVIES... And I've seen better movies shot for under 5 bucks on youtube than what Gareth spent on the craptacular Monsters.

Sorry 'srdiaz' but I'm afraid I can only completely agree with ALL of your points! Particularily Godzilla being a guy and Godzilla actually being the main cahracter in the movie Godzilla.
