The Descendants Trailer

"I'm the back-up parent… the understudy." Fox Searchlight has debuted the first of what I'd call one of the true Oscar 2011 heavy weight contenders - an official trailer on Apple for Alexander Payne's new film The Descendants starring George Clooney. Based on the book by Kaui Hemmings, Clooney stars as Matt King, a man who is trying to take care of his family of two daughters while his wife is in the hospital. It looks phenomenal, like one of those late fall films that will sweep everyone away this year and I cannot wait. The cast includes: Shailene Woodley, Beau Bridges, Robert Forster, Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard. Watch below!

A land baron (Clooney) tries to re-connect with his two daughters after his wife suffers a boating accident.

The Descendants is both written and directed by Oscar winning American filmmaker Alexander Payne, director of Election, About Schmidt and Sideways previously, plus a screenwriter for Jurassic Park III and I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry. The screenplay was actually co-written by Payne and Nat Faxon & Jim Rash, from Kaui Hart Hemmings' novel of the same name. Fox Searchlight will be bringing bringing The Descendants to limited theaters starting November 18th. We also expect to watch this at TIFF. Thoughts?

is it just me or is sound totally messed up for this trailer?

Give it a refresh and try again... The encoding might've been kinda wacky but its been updated now.

Do they really have to give away that she was cheating on him? Jeezus christ. Can't anyone let us just be surprised in a movie anymore? Other than that quibble about the ad, it looks like a good movie.

I'm with you. It's so annoying... they have to sell it no matter what.

Yeah, I would be greatly disappointed if the whole message of the film was that he got cheated on... that would be stupid. So I don't feel like it's that much plot detail to give away.

I guess I must be showing my age but I think it gives away too much. Whats wrong with it just being a drama about a man caring for his daughters and their mother is ill? If thats not your kind of movie then so be it.  In this age of releasing so many clips online of movies before they even come out I guess most people just need it all spelled out for them before they plunk down their money. I am desperate to see Super 8, yet I refuse to watch all those clips online. All that exposure ,  it RUINS the simple pleasure of watching a movie.  Why on earth do u need to know EVERY detail before going to see it? What happened to letting a movie unfold and being surprised by the story? yeah yeah, I'm old. now get off my lawn.  *shakes fist*

I agree with you, 19 here btw ;). I love to see a trailer of a movie but do avoid clips of the movie. It does ruin the experience by seeing scenes before you watch the movie. It's the same thing with videogames, some people always watching every clip that get's released.

Clooney is a national treasure (among a few others). Can't wait, but damn December 16th. Somebody thinking Oscar?

I get the impression that this was shot in Hawaii...I don't know...there's just something about it. Looks great though.

Oh it definitely was shot in Hawaii... Was shot on Kauai and Oahu, Hawaii last year, I think. Don't you just love when a film actually shoots in the location it's supposed to take place? Always has a more realistic feeling to it.

Yeah, i'm currently living in Oahu (Hau'ula) and it was cool to see locations that I recognize.

At first I thought it felt like Up in the Air, with GC as a narrator, but it's different. Might be good...

Looks very charming and heartfelt. Got kinda bummed when the trailer reminded me that Payne directed Sideways (man, was that overrated and poorly advertised) but this looks really good. Also, is it just me or does Clooney seem so down to earth he could be one of your friend's cool uncles?:P

looks decent, not the type of movie I would find myself saying "I wanna watch that" but if I saw it come on tv I'd be like "Looks pretty good." just not my typical genre but still I'm pretty touched just by the trailer
