Must Watch: First Teaser Trailer for 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes'!

Apes Will Rise! Fox has unveiled the teaser trailer on Apple for Rise of the Planet of the Apes, a new prequel in the beloved Planet of the Apes sci-fi series. Just yesterday, WETA revealed their first look at the movie, as they're doing all of the CGI rendering on every ape, including Caesar, played by Andy Serkis. Now we have our first tease of what to expect and it looks really, really good. I'm intrigued by how realistic all of the apes are, compared to the men-in-suit of the classic films, but the emotion on Caesar's face is what makes me feel like this will be amazing. This was only just a teaser, but I'm definitely looking forward to it!

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is set in a contemporary San Francisco and follows a young scientist who becomes a crucial figure in the war between humans and apes. Franco has been testing his Alzheimer cure on apes, but one of them, named Caesar, starts to evolve rapidly, so he takes him home to live with him and protect him from the "cruel doctors," thus starting the inevitable ape revolution. James Franco stars, along with Andy Serkis providing motion capture for Caesar and Weta doing the CG, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, plus Tom Felton. Rise of the Planet of the Apes arrives in theaters on August 5th late summer.

Title is terrible script/ plot seems good those effect they use on the monkeys look TERRIBLE though. not so much that last 3 second scene, fox has always had trouble with CGI and animation stuff my example? DBZ evolution. But I have high hopes for this film now, LETS SEE SOME MONKEYS GET SHOT!

Terrible? The effects are flawless. You shouldn't comment if you know nothing about it. I work in feature film as a vfx artist. Sadly there's no law preventing ignorance online.

nah I some what agree, but its more of a conflict in the artist conception vs logic... they tried to make the apes/chimpz look too real human...a human has to do facial expressions for it unless they can make a real chimp do it all... I mean really these are lab chimps and unless they somehow explain that they alter muscle structures in their faces as well as in their brains in the movie.. its a flaw and makes it look stupid and i laughed my ass off watching this stupid trailer in the theaters... and no movie in the History of time is flawless there will always be flaws there will always be cuts and bloopers and what have you... it is obviously visually stimulating compare to a movie 10, 20 years oh hell even most 5 years ago..

exactly the monkeys look like humans its ridiculous. The whole thing looks ridiculous.

I agree. And what is with the apes look? I really liked the original film with Heston. The apes had a more of human feel to them. The effect shots by weta don't look that great in this new film.

Absolutely love it and that's saying something since I’ve been a fan of all the originals in since they were first released in the theaters. One question Alex, wasn't there a report awhile back saying it wasn't going to be released until January 2012?

Im sorry but this is kinda ridiculous. I mean the army, armed to the teeth vs ... monkeys. Don't get me wrong I love Planet of the Apes I just never imagined how retarded it started. I'm sorry if I'm being negative about it, I think I haven't recovered from Tim Burtons take.

I not so sure about WETA being the best... I think it's pretty much competing with ILM for the first place and Digital Domain is right behind them.
BelowTheVoid on Apr 14, 2011
23
This argument holds no weight. The Oscar people are notorious for giving awards to the trendy nominees (which despite my love and awe for it, Inception was) and not to deserving nominees (not saying inception didn't deserve either...) To base a decision on which Effect houses is the best based on Oscar wins is stupid. ILM is the best, they have redfined cinema time and again. Watch the documentary on them. They are also indirectly responsible for the birth of PIXAR. WETA has a long way to go to unseat ILM, and Digital Domain even more so........

I respect the response... but I don't think WETA has that far to go. I grew up on ILM (I'm 30+) and have been awed by them time and again. However I thought LOTR was insanely good.... and as much as I hated Avatar... the visuals were untouchable. I think it fitting that ILM mainstay Steven Spielberg is directing Tintin... a WETA project.
Duane on Apr 14, 2011
26
I think that WETA has unseated them. To make a robot in VFX is not that hard because it is mechanical and based on rigid physics. Transformers was horribly done. If you watch it you can clearly see all the mistakes in the transformations. They used the panning and cutting to hide the mistakes and to distract the viewers. They have failed time and time again on making organic characters as they proved with the last few star wars movies. Avatar was amazing visually and the natural environment and the way they went about doing things was just incredible. WETA have taken the base that ILM have built and have gone on to take it to the next level. Jar Jar was a horribly designed character and no one ever wanted to see another CG character until Gollum came along. Kong was pretty amazingly done as well. Don't get me wrong they both have merrits but I think now that WETA have become a one stop shop, because they have an armory, a digital fx house and a miniature creation house, it's hard to see past them as being the best around at the moment. I also can not stand that George Lucas remotely has a say in some of the movies they do. He ruined Indiana Jones imho.

Looks ridiculously retarded, like someone before said. It's weird, also: Weta can do the most believable digital actors ever(Kong, Gollum, Avatar), yet here it does look fake and CGish. Weird. Now. What's the music? Apart from being little INCEPTIONlike it's quite good.

The whole point and appeal of planet of the apes is that they took over and were that way via evolution, it kind of takes away the aspect and intelligence now they've gone down the road of cheesy horror movies that must explain every little detail. People don't need an stupid explanation that they got that way as a result of alzheimers drug tests, they're over simplify and taking away the originals magic.
Simon on Apr 14, 2011
32
I don't think anything can really take away from an original film. Obviously this is like comparing Apples and Oranges, but take the original Halloween films and then take the film that tried to explain Micheal with curses and symbols. I don't think anyone watches the originals with the thought "he's doing this because a curse is forcing him, poor ol' Mike". That said, this teaser looks good to me 🙂

im hoping they DONT speak, at least not english or any other human language. maybe save for like the LAST scene where Caesar manages to put together a loose sentence. now THAT would be creepy...
Nick S. on Apr 15, 2011
36
Yes, yes, yes. You read my mind. It would just be so damn weird to watch them trying to learn how to speak and making near-speech sounds like those "talking dogs" on AFV except they actually have some idea of what they're saying and what it means. Seeing humanoid apes played by people in costumes and makeup isn't scary or creepy at all. It's just not convincing. You can't complete the illusion. But with this CGI/motion capture work, they'll definitely come up with something creepy.

Wow I am totally blown away - lovely tension, story looks solid and the CG is again ground breaking. I am very excited. Has Weta done this as something which they are personally invested in? Is it partly their IP? I ask this as it clearly states from weta in the trailer.

The movie this was based on had as its premise that trained apes were being used as servants, and thus were everywhere, which is a bit more 'believable' ,relatively speaking, as a scenario for an ape revolution. Also there was a certain Romeroesque element of satire and social critique running through it. Its a shame they've (seemingly) ditched those elements, really...would have made for a far more interesting movie, that worked on a few levels.
Nodin on Apr 14, 2011
44
Draco Malfoy! Also, for those who are saying it doesn't look "real", of course it doesn't. Your mind catches things that are illogical and makes it a point to focus on them. If a monkey was in a cage (like in the first 5 second teaser) it would look insanely detailed and realistic but because they are jumping on helicopters....well that's a little silly isn't it?
Tyler Morgan on Apr 14, 2011
45
This is gonna be maybe one of the lamest comments thrown out there, but something about 2 "OF THE's" in a movie title just automatically makes me think its cheesy, like some crappy camp 60s flick. Odds are this movie will blow but the effects will be great, hell, its coming out in summer which is prime territory for such a cinematic equation.
Voice of Reason on Apr 14, 2011
46
Its still a few months away so im expecting the effects to get much better and Weta have never let me down on that aspect. As for the story....its too early to tell but it looks more like an outbreak movie than Planet of The Apes. The title was only changed very recently and it sucks...what was wrong with Rise Of The Apes??! anyway im still interested to see how it turns out.

This looks very subpar in my opinion. VFX don't look realistic, the acting looks a notch above SyFy channel with all of the appropriate one-liners and all. And the story, meh... And what is it with every action film trailer needing that sound effect that resonates every couple of seconds... This trailer, Transformers 3, I can't remember the names of the others, etc... It all started with Inception last year.

Is it just me or does this look terrible? James Franco makes it sound like it's a parody trailer on Funny or Die. Andy Serkis is great and so is Weta but I have never seen the effects company promoted above everything else in the trailer. Also, what's with the title change? "The Rise of the Planet of the Apes" is horrible, they should have stuck with "The Rise of the Apes" -- we're smart enough to remember the franchise. I mean, the concept is great, but the script and the actors. Yikes.

Some other Armenian icons and legends include Andre Agassi, Charles Aznavour, Eric Bogosian, Cher, Princess Diana (1/64 Armenian), Atom Egoyan, Arshile Gorky, The Kardashians, Dr. Jack Kevorkian, Kirk Kerkorian, Mike Connors, William Saroyan, Seymour Skinner (Armen Tamzarian), System of a Down, Steven Zaillian, Michael Vartan, Gregory Peck, Dita Von Teese, Ken Davitian, David Hedison, David Dickinson, Simon Abkarian, the Hughes brothers (Albert and Allen).

Rise of the Planet of the Apes of the Planet of Earth. Jesus, why don’t they put the year and the day in the title too. Super redundant. This is my 100% honest opinion. That trailer is one of the most unintentionally hilarious movie trailers I have ever seen. I laughed so hard when I saw the ape staring at the couple in the bedroom, and laughed even HARDER when I saw all of the bare-assed apes wreaking havoc on the Golden Gate Bridge. If this movie is half as retarded as it looks, I'm in. I'm so interested in this movie now. Ironically, of course.
