"Whoooaaa nerd alert!" Perhaps the new Napoleon Dynamite, or perhaps something else entirely, the first official trailer for the indie comedy blacktino (yes it's titled lowercase) from Texan filmmaker Aaron Burns recently debuted on Vimeo (via /Film). You may remember hearing about this before, as it was part of some odd viral campaign with Michelle Rodriguez at Fantastic Fest last year, but now we know what it is. Austin Marshall stars as an "overweight half-black, half-hispanic nerd" named Stefan who's struggling to fit in at his high school. This looks like it has a lot of charm and whit, I'm very much looking forward to it. Enjoy!
Watch the first official trailer for Aaron Burns' blacktino:
A dark teen comedy about an overweight half-black, half-hispanic nerd named Stefan Daily. Struggling to find his place in a mostly white high school, he finds sanctuary amongst the social outcasts in the theatre department. Like all great teen comedies, it ensures that the torch of "teen angst" continues to burn bright.
blacktino is both written and directed by Aaron Burns, an Austin, Texas native who is making his feature debut with this following a short titled Now or Never. This is premiering at the SXSW Film Festival coming up in March, where we expect this to get a lot of buzz and probably pick up a distributor, too. We first heard about this at Fantastic Fest last year in a little Michelle Rodriguez viral promotion. What did you think?

i am guessing from the mendoza sign that he is half-argentine? i'll give it a try. still, the best blacktino (albeit Dominican) nerd story is The Brief and Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao. I wish they would make it into a movie b/c it's an absolutely great book.

First thing that crossed my mind. A movie from that book would be amazing. I'm sure Diaz was the first to introduce the idea of the black latino nerd.

"A dark teen comedy about a half-black..." I had to laugh when I read that. I'm sorry and totally not digging, maybe it should be, "A dark comedy about a half-black, half-latino teenager..." I know it's a small thing, I'm just sayin' though... The trailer looks great, I'll put it on the list to check out. While I enjoyed Napolean Dynamite, I don't think everyone got it. This movie however looks like it'll have a little bit for everybody.

Wow, this actually looks quite interesting. I hope that it comes near me so I can watch it. I live near SF, though, so I'm hoping the chance is not that remote. Hope it does well at SXSW!
