Comes for the Madness, Stay for a Drink! Johnny Depp is finally back for more Hunter S. Thompson wackiness! After delaying this film for quite a while, FilmDistrict has finally launched the first official trailer for The Rum Diary, based off of Hunter S. Thompson's novel, starring Johnny Depp as Paul Kemp, a divorced alcoholic who heads down to San Juan to work as a journalist for the newspaper. This is as wacky as it sounds, but looks awesome, at least like it's going to be insanely fun to watch. The cast includes Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi and Richard Jenkins. "No such thing as 470 proof alcohol!"
Watch the official trailer for Bruce Robinson's The Rum Diary, from ETonline.com (via Movieline):
Based on Hunter S. Thompson's novel, The Rum Diary, directed by Bruce Robinson (Withnail & I), follows Depp as Paul Kemp, a divorced alcoholic and struggling novelist who decides to "kick around" in San Juan until his ship comes in, working as a journalist for a newspaper that's on its last legs, drinking "gallons of rum" and experimenting with LSD. With his new friend Bob Sala by his side, Kemp becomes entangled in a corrupt hotel development scheme with a PR consultant named Sanderson. After quite a delay, FilmDistrict will finally be releasing The Rum Diary in theaters starting October 28th this fall. Planning on seeing it?

Opening shot: Johnny probably looks like that every morning! The very last part is the funniest - "Try and look normal."

I think its cool that he sounds just like in "Fear n Loathing in Las Vegas". Either that or thats just how Depp sounds this days...

Actually I think he sounds a lot like Bob Stencil. Then again I've never seen "Fear n..." so maybe Bob got his inspiration from it.

Also Depp has four voices: American, Americana, British and Kooky.

A superb book, and Depp can be relied upon to deliver a great performance. However, a couple of interesting things - the director (Bruce Robinson, responsible for the classic Withnail & I) has not directed a film since 1992. This, combined with the fact that they apparently changed the ending to make it less of a drunken feverdream and more of a heroic fight against a corrupt businessman, does not bode well.

I loved fear and Loathing... right up until I saw a documentary on Hunter S. Thompson. Now I just feel so sorry for his family, kinda sucks all the fun out of it

The reference for Robinson should be "Withnail & I", not "Jennifer 8".

I want to love it, but I'm not sure. I'll continue holding onto Fear and Loathing for now till proven otherwise. About time we got this trailer though.

FUCK YES. Bruce Robinson, one of my favourite directors, adapting Hunter Thompson, one of my favourite writers, starring Johnny Depp, one of my favourite actors. My head might explode from awesomeness.

I am actually not that happy about this. It looks too much like a film about the good life in the caribbean, and leans too much on the Fear and Loathing film. The Rum Diary was written in and about a completly different fase in his life and reads far more grim, desperate and depressed than this trailer shows. I will, of course, watch it anyway:)
