Must Watch: One More Fantastic Theatrical Trailer for 'Green Lantern'

Green Lantern

We've already established that the first lengthy trailer for Green Lantern failed to impress many people. However, ever since then, the WonderCon footage, extended TV spot, and theatrical trailer have all restored my faith and excitement in this DC Comics adaptation. However, I think the biggest problem is still getting audiences interested in a hero with so much mythology who isn't very well known outside of comic book geek circles. Thankfully, for those who don't know very much about Green Lantern, the powerful ring and all the cosmic elements of the story, this trailer lays it all out almost as a short prologue. Get a look below.

Watch this one more theatrical trailer for DC Comics' Green Lantern movie from YouTube:

A test pilot (Ryan Reynolds) is granted a mystical green ring that bestows him with otherworldly powers, as well as membership into an intergalactic squadron tasked with keeping the peace within the universe.

Green Lantern is directed by veteran New Zealand filmmaker Martin Campbell, of Defenseless, GoldenEye, The Mask of Zorro, Vertical Limit, Casino Royale and Edge of Darkness previously. The script was written by Greg Berlanti ("Everwood", "Eli Stone"), Michael Goldenberg (Peter Pan, Order of the Phoenix), Michael Green ("Everwood", "Kings") & comic book writer Marc Guggenheim ("FlashForward") and is based on the DC Comics superhero. Warner Bros is bringing Green Lantern to theaters in 3D everywhere on June 17th.

No one flys the first time. Not even Green Lantern. In case you missed it Green Lantern is more than a superpower. It's a lifestyle. I'm proud to have worn the uniform of the Corps. But it was'nt all easy going in fact it took some getting use to. I had to work on being a hero to finaly become one. I think the movie could have done with a bit more advertising. Green Lantern captures the humanspirt in all of us. I'm on facebook. Look up Willis. Join the Corps.

why did they make this film? nobody cares about this superhero. He signed on for Deadpool and should have made that instead

It's like saying why did God made the universe? Good grief why? can't RR act on GL even though he signed up for Deadpool?

Harley on May 21, 2011

15

Because I guess that RR is not who some people _wanted_ for GL.  They had someone else in mind, and of course, the casting agents in Hollywood didn't listen to them, so they're pissed off now. Or maybe it's because he was married to Scarlett Johannsen.  Who really knows?

Anonymous on May 21, 2011

16

Dave12 - let it go, that movie isn't getting made with RR.  WB will make sure he stays within the DC and GL world of films

Now thats the trailer I was looking for! Awesome! I think it was a nice intro-trailer, especially for those who have no idea what the Green Lantern is about.

Looks amazing to me.  Sure, we have to watch the final film to pass judgement, but that trailer sure caught my eye.  Even better than the second one. Hard to believe that so many were ready to dismiss the film based on the first trailer...

19

yea, i agree but that first trailer was awful, compaird to the last 2 released. it would have much more hype now if it was a nice and fully finished trailer at the start.

Roderick on May 21, 2011

23

Why do people say that now about everything? you really have lost all that opinions meaning... This is a monologue about what the films about feauturing scenes to do with what the monoluge is talking about and nothing more.. it gets to the point and does it theatrically and interestingly, and makes people more excited to see the whole thing, and is in no way 'the entire movie'.

RhythmDave on May 21, 2011

24

Always wondered about that--how they could pass judgement based on two minutes.  Or maybe they're just conceited s**theads out to sound cooler than the rest of us--hence the snark and cynicism. Either way, screw 'em.  I'm checking out the WHOLE film before passing judgement.  'Tis better that way.

Anonymous on May 21, 2011

yeah...despite being 118 mins longer the actually movie really offers nothing more than these 2 mins (that's how dumb you sound)

I think age has nothing to do to have a nice entertaiment watching a simple movie. I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy it.

Manuel on May 21, 2011

32

And, by the way, to understand why the "color code", well, it's related to the spectrum which forms the white light (green, yellow, orange, red, indigo, blue and violet) where every life was created.

Manuel on May 21, 2011

33

Hey Manuel, good points.  Actually, there was a GL comic where he fired the ring across a vast distance and used the Doppler shift to convert the green beam to yellow to stop a rouge Lantern (at least, I think that was the story.  It's been a while since I've read it....) But I'm still up to seeing this.  I mean, a great-looking GL comic that seems to be faithful to the comics....and still, all some folks can do is bitch.  Oh well.

Anonymous on May 21, 2011

34

Hi, Scopedog, sorry I haven't read that story. I'm a GL enthusiast, but not an expert. The "mythology" behind Green Lantern it's very interesting, I have faith that not only the movie will be 100% loyal to the comic book source, but also very interesting for mature audiences.  The only way you can enjoy art it's just opening your mind.

Manuel on May 21, 2011

35

Manuel, I actually remember the darned story now (yeah, I know...NOW he remembers....).  It was "Ganthet's Tale", a one-shot story written by Larry Niven and with plot and art by John Byrne.  I think it was released before the "Hal Jordan goes nuts" storyline back in the 90s which led to Kyle Rayner getting the ring.... As for the movie being loyal to the source, I feel that it will be--I mean, one of the screenwriters did work on the comic, and DC's Geoff Johns did consult on the film.  "The only way you can enjoy art is just opening your mind." Nice.  Gotta steal that....

Anonymous on May 22, 2011

36

It is a well done trailer, but I think that it's audience will already go to see it anyway. I hated the first trailer and I think they have done a good job focusing on the grandness of the scale of the story instead of RR being a snarky douche.  I'm sure it will be good, but I don't think the huge audiences will go see it.

thetylerw on May 21, 2011

37

Good point about the grand scale of the story being the focus of the last two trailers.  I do agree about the concern of huge audiences not seeing it (since GL is not really well-known outside of comic fandom), but it could be a hit--after all, not many knew of Iron Man, and the film did gangbusters when it was released. A solid film and good word of mouth may bring the audiences in.  Plus, Campbell is a capable director....but you're right, we'll just have to wait until June 17th.

More they show the more obvious it is that this film is not going to be good. The trailer music and editing doesn't fool me. The CGI still looks half baked. Pass.

Raji on May 21, 2011

50

"The CGI still looks half baked. Pass" Yep....and I guess you can say this from your comfortable job at ILM or Digital Domain or MPC, right? Christ in a chariot-driven sidecar...just how do you know that the film will be a piece of crap because of two minutes?

Anonymous on May 21, 2011

lol fanboy stfu. obviously if you have an opinion people have their own. don't have to keep commenting because trailers can show whole movies. go and clean your green lantern comics from all the jacking off you've  done after watching the trailer.

lmao on the "Christ in a chariot-driven sidecar" classic lol Scopedog the one's complaining or hating fall into 2 cat's, 1 they're Marvel fans and they see this will be better, 2 they're comic fans but hate the thought of RR being Hal.

I'll give you a THIRD category. DC/Marvel fan that thinks the character designs, the CGI, and the cliche story beats SUCK beyond repair. And here's a FOURTH category. A ticket buyer that won't be paying to see this film.

59

I only know Green Lantern because he was mentioned in Seinfeld.. But I guess in US more people read comics. Still, I think that Deadpool guy is 100x less popular. Why would they make an expensive movie about him?

llg on May 21, 2011

60

Deadpool is pretty new, compared to Green Lantern. The reason a lot of comic book fans want to see a Deadpool movie is he's over the top - extremely violent, a loud mouth snarker, just barely over the line between hero and villian, and routinely breaks the fourth wall (self referencing and talks directly to the audience).

serke on May 22, 2011

61

 wow

kal el on May 21, 2011

62

Hmmmm...but did that reflect on the movies themselves? A bad trailer does not necessarily mean a bad film (THE IRON GIANT comes to mind).  Of course, a great trailer doesn't mean a great film either--remember THE PHANTOM MENACE brouhaha back in 1999?

I feel this trailer was better than previous trailers because it took itself serious. I've always felt this movie looked very campy, and easily skip-able. I still doubt I'll watch it in theaters, however I walk away from this trailer with much more knowledge of the character, and I appreciate that.

Jace on May 22, 2011

69

Jace, what you said...pretty much one of the most honest comments about the film. I will see it in the theater myself, but I agree--this trailer is the best one yet, and it does give a good synopsis about the Corps, the Guardians, and yes, Hal Jordan.

Anonymous on May 22, 2011

70

Music was cool for this trailer. But the visual effects still looks horrible. They won't be winning awards for the CGI that's for sure. Why didn't WB just go with a better visual effects house like ILM or Weta?  Costume design is horrible. Who's idea was it to have the pale green eyes with the deep black pupils? Makes him look slimy like a unit.

UFC on May 22, 2011

71

UFC, it's easy to dismiss the effects, but remember, they are working on it up to the last minute.  And as for the effects companies--SPI, Hydraulx, Rising Sun, and New Deal may not be ILM, but they are more than capable of doing great CGI. Besides...ILM was probably busy with POTC4 and TF3.  Weta's probably swamped with THE HOBBIT.  And maybe WB had to deal with the cost factor.    And the "pale green eyes with deep black pupils" is from the comic (which sometimes had him with just white slits in the mask). Look, the way the CGI was done and the designs might not be your cup of tea.  That's all right.  But just being dismissive of the effects and designs...I dunno.  Maybe everything might be better in the finished film?

Anonymous on May 22, 2011

72

Listen Scopedog, I hear what you're saying. Your last sentence pretty much says you see the same weaknesses and flaws as I do. Trailer is suppose to get us to want to go see it. It's not doing it in this case. WB has one big tent pole film this summer and that's Green Lantern. And for that they should have gone with one of the best VFX houses rather than considering budget and kick backs. For that mistake I will not pay to see this film. I'm not the only one. That's all I'm saying.

UFC on May 22, 2011

73

Understood.  And you're right--others will not see the film, but I will say that at least you've made a good argument for why you won't. (Trust me, it's a hell of a lot better than most arguments against seeing the film.  And I sincerely mean that...)

Anonymous on May 22, 2011

74

This trailer changed my mind a tad. I just DON'T want to willingly watch anything with Blake Lively in it. I guess I might have to for this.

fem!anon on May 22, 2011

75

Well...don't let one actor stop you from seeing this.  I'm not Blake Lively's biggest fan (far from it!) but there are a lot of other factors that make me want to see this film.  She isn't one of them, but she's not spoiling it for me either.

Anonymous on May 22, 2011

76

Do you have a dog in this fight, Scopedog? You seem to be trying really hard to convince everyone to see this piece of crap.

Gibbo on May 22, 2011

77

No dogs at all, Gibbo.  No ties to WB, DC, or anyone who's making the film.  They can speak for and defend it much, much better. And all I'm saying is that the best, and only honest way to really judge the film is to see it.  And unless you have seen it (the whole thing, not a trailer) you really would not know that it's a "piece of crap." So, I'm checking it out in the theater.  If it's a great experience watching it, fine.  If it is garbage, I will say so.

Meh. I like the trailers for the other summer films. There's like one big movie a week this summer from here on out. I usually end up watching 2, maybe 3. And then there's all the awesome video games coming out. Green Lantern will NOT be one of them. Thanks, WB, for all the trailers and tv spots. It made my decision all the more easier.
