Sharlto Copley

I always love hearing about great new sci-fi films in the works. Deadline reports on a new sci-fi project being sold at TIFF titled Europa, a "contemporary space adventure" developed by Wayfare Entertainment and Misher Films. Spanish director Sebastian Cordero is at the helm, and has a cast attached that includes District 9's Sharlto Copley, Michael Nyquist (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Anamaria Marinca (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days) and "Asian superstar" Daniel Wu. Quite a unique cast. The project is fully funded and has a screenplay by Philip Gelatt (The Bleeding House). You've got to hear that this is about.

Europa is the story of a six-person team of astronauts from various international space stations who are sent by a private sector corporation to be the first manned mission to Jupiter's fourth moon. Discovered in 1610 by Galileo, Europa is one of the big celestial bodies in our solar system that's believed to contain an ocean underneath its surface. If you haven't already been fascinated by our solar system recently thanks to that stunning Saturn photo, then consider how cool this project about journeying to Europa could be, and what they might find there. I'm curious to see whether they go more thriller like Apollo 18 or something more epic like Mission to Mars. Either way, I'm definitely in, can't wait to see how this turns out already.

The project is aiming to start shooting this fall. Production designer Eugenio Caballero, who worked on Resident Evil: Extinction and Pan's Labyrinth, is said to be the director of photography. Misher Films' Kevin Misher is producing with Wayfare's Ben Browning. Ecuadorian filmmaker Sebastián Cordero has a filmography that includes Rage, Chronicles and Ratas, ratones, rateros. Bring on more sci-fi, there's always room for more, especially original ideas. Europa is definitely a film I'll be keeping an eye on! Sound good?

Darn it, I always wanted to do something like this. Nevermind, let's first see from what angle they're coming at it. Warren Ellis, for instance, has written a graphic novel about Europa called 'Ocean'. It's pretty awesome, give it a try.

Ocean is a damned good read, too. It would make a great movie.

I'll look out that Warren Ellis book, sounds good.

I read that Oceans book, it was okay, I liked the beginning more, but it kindo ended a bit fast.

JPL and NASA will send a probe someday and then we will all know for sure if there is an ocean underneath that iceball 🙂

Will be interesting to see how this develops. Alex, I noticed that you first write that the director is Spanish (not true) and then that he is Ecuadorian, which he is.
