The Hunger Games

As fans of viral marketing, we found a website earlier this year that claimed to be a viral for Lionsgate's The Hunger Games adaptation, but it turns out it was unofficial and being run by fans (I won't link it for that reason). We've been waiting/hoping that Lionsgate would launch an official viral for the movie, and it looks like they finally have, in connection with the teaser trailer revealed this weekend. There's not much to it yet, but a viral site at thecapitol.pn (tip via Movie Viral) has launched containing a distorted image, a twitter link, and not much more. The tweet states: "The Capitol knows who I am. Identify yourself immediately."

The Hunger Games is both written and directed by Oscar nominated filmmaker Gary Ross, director of Seabiscuit and Pleasantville previously, but also writer of Big, Mr. Baseball, Dave, Lassie, Pleasantville and Seabiscuit. It's adapted from Suzanne Collins' popular series of novels, first published in 2008. Lionsgate is bringing The Hunger Games to theaters everywhere starting March 23rd, 2012 next spring. Excited yet?

Flash is so 2001. I like the sound effects though. The glitchy image is pretty good too.

I may be the most excited person on your site when it comes to this movie/s. I seriously CAN NOT wait and now that I know who the writer/director is I am that much more excited. March can't get here fast enough.

I HIGHLY doubt that you're the most excited. Just saying, but I am SUPER SUPER SUPER excited and LOVE LOVE LOVE these books. I have a Mockingjay bookmark, I am gonna buy the Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo of the movie, when it comes out, and I am gonna re-read the books a ton! I am on my second time.

Glad to see HG love here.  I am incredibly excited for these films and almost as nervous for the outcome.  I know I'll enjoy them regardless, but I really hope they don't taint them by reving up the romance to grab the tween audience.  I think it was done perfectly in the books, and a true adapdation would have no problem whatsoever getting mass appeal.

Could the beeping noise on the website be Morse Code?

What is viral anyway? Advertising people are happy to receive? Why is a fan site worse than a viral site?
