Briefly: This was completely expected, but always great to hear confirmation anyway. TheOneRing reports that Peter Jackson has confirmed via his Facebook that actor Orlando Bloom will be returning to play Legolas, the Elf of the Woodland Realm, in The Hobbit movies based on J.R.R. Tolkien's book, which are currently shooting in 3D/48FPS down in New Zealand as we speak. Bloom hasn't actually been appearing in too many movies recently, but with a storyline that "bridges" Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, we naturally assumed Bloom would be one of the actors returning to Middle Earth. Read Jackson's full statement below.
Ten years ago, Orlando Bloom created an iconic character with his portrayal of Legolas. I'm excited to announce today that we'll be revisiting Middle Earth with him once more. I’m thrilled to be working with Orlando again. Funny thing is, I look older—and he doesn’t! I guess that's why he makes such a wonderful elf.
We'll keep you updated on all things The Hobbit as the two movies continue shooting. As always, you can follow Peter Jackson's updates on his Facebook or follow our own updates with our category for The Hobbit.

Glad to hear he's in a 4th installment for a franchise that will actually be awesome.

Im interested to see what role Legolas will play in the movie and how much weight it will have in the story, especially since he never makes an appearance in the book version of the Hobbit

Keep that picture to yourself if you get one, thanks. I would appreciate the thrill of waiting for the big reveal as we follow Bilbo and the Dwarves through the film. I am still coming to terms with the fact that this film is being made. It will hit me with a bang soon. Ah...to relive those days of excitement in the lead up to the original LOTR film. Good times.

Jayzuz he might as well change his name to Legolas, since every other studio in the world has decided (accurately) that he literally cannot act. The first Harry Potter when the kids were all like 5 has a higher standard of acting than Orlando Blooms career. Two drunk teenagers pretending to be 21 have a higher standard of acting than Orlando Blooms career. Still, congrats on the hot wife. She is smoking.

Well, if Legolas can appear in it despite not being in the book, then with Aragorn being a Dunedain I expect Mortensen will as well. I Love Jackson's continuity idea and I really feel now that there will be a lot of new threads in the Hobbit movies to tie them in with LOTR's. However, unless I missed the announcemet, I'm at a loss as to why we haven't heard that Hugo Weaving has been confirmed to retrun as Elrond, especially since his character is actually in the Hobbit book.
