Patton Oswalt / Odd Thomas / Willem Dafoe

Almost a week ago there was a minor casting update for Stephen Sommers' adaptation of Dean Koontz's Odd Thomas series of novels. It was THR that had word that Willem Dafoe (Spider-Man) was in talks to join the cast as a local police chief. While we love Dafoe as the next movie fan, we passed on the news until a favorite of mine was also added to the project today. Variety reports comedian Patton Oswalt (Ratatouille, Blade Trinity) has signed on to play an eccentric artist who designs sculptures, including a steel pendant that the titular clairvoyant hero (played by the talented Anton Yelchin) wears around his neck.

For those just joining us, the story follows a short-order cook named Odd Thomas who can commune with the dead, a secret only his girlfriend (Addison Timlin) and the local police chief (Dafoe) know. Thomas can also spot malevolent forces called bodachs, who feed on pain and portent imminent death. When Odd sees them in spades surrounding a stranger, he finds himself in a race against time to avert a catastrophe. Oswalt's live-action roles have mostly been kept to small roles in comedies or comedic relief in films like Blade Trinity. But his role in Big Fan just shows how great of an actor he really is, and I'm excited about any role he takes. How about you?

I absolutely can not wait, I love the books and so far I'm loving the cast. This will be amazing if handled properly.

I loved this book as well. I always thought this koontz book and "Lightning" should have been made into a movie, and here it is. I'm excited. William Dafoe was pretty awesome in daybreakers too.

Sure, I'm happy for everybody involved...except for the fact that it makes my Google-off with Oswalt all the more difficult. (makyamcbee.wordpress.com if you care to help with the cause. Many thanks, lovelies)

I always had Justin Long in mind to play Odd. But everybody seems happy with Anton, so I'm sure he will be great.
