Last month, when Nicholas Winding Refn's action thriller Drive his the Cannes Film Festival (read Alex's review here), we also learned that star Ryan Gosling was going to direct and star in a remake of The Idolmaker at MGM. However, Deadline now says he's going to have to step away from the project because his future slate just makes him way too busy to take on a directing and acting gig. Gosling is in the middle of pre-production on A Place Beyond the Pines, which has him co-starring with Bradley Cooper and reuniting with Blue Valentine director Derek Cianfrance, and then immediately after he has another project.
Gangster Squad, from Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer, will have Gosling working with Sean Penn and Josh Brolin. Both projects sound much more enticing than a remake of The Idolmaker anyway, but apparently MGM is still keen on getting the project off the ground. However, with Gosling stepping away, it sounds like they might hold out for Gosling to come back to the project sometime down the road. However, at some point Gosling is also going to shoot the remake of Logan's Run with Nicholas Winding Refn, so who knows when he won't be busy again. Personally, I don't think a remake of The Idolmaker is all that promising of a project, but that's just me. What do you think?

The original is one of my favorite movies. They better at least use one or two of the original songs. Ray Sharkey was amazing.
