Sean Hayes Cast as Larry in the Farrelly Brothers' 'Three Stooges' Film

Sean Hayes / Larry Fine

At the end of last month we learned that Will Sasso had officially joined the cast of the Farrelly Brothers' long-gestating big screen adaptation of The Three Stooges. Around the time Sasso was cast as Curly, apparently James Marsden and Hank Azaria were the top contenders to play Larry and Moe respectively. However, Deadline is now reporting that Sean Hayes ("Will & Grace") has actually landed the role of Larry and there are still several unnamed actors circling the role of Moe. And with two stooges down and only one more to go, it sounds like Bobby and Peter Farelly may finally be able to get this new comedy off the ground.

Hayes is plenty experience with over-the-top comedy from his work on "Will & Grace" not to mention flamboyant appearances in The Cat in the Hat and Win a Date with Tad Hamilton. He should be a great addition to the cast, and is just more evidence of the Farrelly's finding whoever is best for each role rather than wrangling big names.

For me, the most interesting aspect of this production will be whether or not the slapstick humor that is usually confined to comedic shorts can be expanded to a 90-minute film. Apparently Mel Brooks came close to putting a Three Stooges movie together before turning it into Silent Movie. He says, "It's such physical humor and so hard to sustain a plot that could withstand their antics for that long." See what I mean? Do you think they can pull it off?

The Farrelly's have said that the movie will consist of three shorts instead of one singular 90 minute story. It should make for an interesting viewing experience...

Sean Hayes also played Jerry Lewis in a TV Movie I haven't seen. Was it good?

I second that Benecio Del Toro would be perfect for Moe, give him a few extra pounds and that bowl cut, and your golden!
