Last summer we found out that Christian Bale was lined up to star in the long-gestating drama The Last Photograph from producer Zack Snyder and the team behind 300. However, at the time, the news was a little premature since negotiating hadn't even begun and Bale had only read a draft of the script at some point. Well, it appears Bale is still involved with the project as Deadline now mentions his name along with Sean Penn as being part of the cast. And as we heard with the Bale rumor, Niels Arden Oplev (the man behind the Swedish adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) has been confirmed to direct the film.

The story in The Last Photograph follows a war correspondent (Bale) who witnesses and is the only survivor of an attack on a group of Americans. Meanwhile Penn would play a retired ex-special ops soldier who comes to the scene determined to free a family member who has been kidnapped. The journalist agrees to help identify the kidnappers and travel the rough terrain to find them, in exchange for the story, but the road brings them in confrontation with tribal regions of Afghanistan, and none of the diplomats will help. Somehow a photograph serves as a catalyst for both of the characters' journeys.

Production would be sometime in 2012 after Christian Bale finishes shooting The Dark Knight Rises. As of now Penn is only circling the project, but it sounds like he'll be officially cast very soon. Warner Bros. seems keen to get Penn on a project, but he's already turned down the previously reported offer for Gangster Squad and even a role in Man of Steel). Sounds like there's the a lot of potential for a great drama here with Oplev at the helm with Bale and Penn at his disposal. What do you guys think?
