Are you ready for a "romance adventure" project (haven't heard that in a long time) wrapped in a car racing movie to be directed by the action filmmaker currently shooting The Expendables 2? THR is reporting that Simon West, who also directed Con Air, The General's Daughter, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, The Mechanic and Nicolas Cage's Medallion, which was just retitled to Stolen, is in negotiations to direct the film Dust and Glory. Produced independently by Top Cat Media and Blue Star Ent., the story is set during the 1950s' REDeX trials, which covered over 10,000 miles of the toughest racing terrain in Australia, maybe the world.
This actually sounds kind of cool, especially if West delivers some good action. Dust and Glory is described a cross between Mad Max and Jewel of the Nile. Here's some info on the real Redex trials down in Oz. The screenplay, by newcomer Robert Lewis Galinsky, follows a rivalry between an American hotshot and an Australian legend. Does that mean those two get together, or is there another hot babe in the mix, too? Set in the 1950's, a time when roads around the coast were outback tracks and a journey like this was more a pioneering adventure than a motor sport. Good logline. Producers hope to start shooting next summer in Australia and it sounds like if things come together, we can expect to hear casting by the end of this year. This is moving rather quick, but I think it seems like it could be cool, we'll keep an eye on it. Sound good?
