Snyder Talks About Being Excited to Bring Us a 'Modern' Superman

Zack Snyder / Superman

Now that we have Henry Cavill set to play the Man of Steel/Clark Kent, director Zack Snyder is getting closer and closer to starting production, with casting finalizing soon and pre-production already underway. Snyder spoke with SFX Magazine (via ComingSoon) recently and actually opened up just a bit about the kind of Superman we'll see in Superman: Man of Steel come 2012. "My feeling about Superman is that I've been a fan of the character for a long time. But the question for me was always, 'What can you do with Superman in a modern world?'" Then Chris Nolan and David Goyer finally came up with the perfect answer.

While Snyder is directing, Nolan is producing as it was Goyer's idea that first got him excited in developing.

"My feeling about Superman is that I've been a fan of the character for a long time. But the question for me was always, 'What can you do with Superman in a modern world?' And I think the amazing thing that Chris and David have created, that I'm working on now, and the reason why I was like, 'Yeah, I’ll do that,' was that they found that in him. They found the why in him. That's the exciting part for me."

That's not all he says either. When asked about how this might be different than previous iterations, "I can't really talk about that without being kind of specific" was Zack's first response, but then he added: "But I can say I think Superman needs to be physical." Interesting answer. Many fans have wanted them to get much more modern and/or edgier with Superman, especially as a way of differentiating it from the other versions of past, and maybe that's what he's planning. We still don't know what exactly this idea is that has a more "modern" or even more "physical" edge this time, but I'm extremely curious to know. Snyder has definitely piqued my interests, so we'll keep listening. You can expect more Superman news will be on the way soon!

Cool dude! But, like, don't fuck it up!

Ugh! I don't know. I think he is gonna fuck it up. Saturday Night Fever hair do?! I hope its not too much CGI like Sucker Punch, if that, nothing looks real. He did say modern world right. I hope he addresses the clark kent glasses disguise.

Snyder-Goyer-Nolan... the "Trinity" of DC films. Kinda interesting team-up we have here.

Wow!!!! So Awesome!!! I cant wait! In some strange way I have this feeling that they may change the origin story slightly. Also, I want it to be bloody!!! 😉

As long as they don't mess with the original costume design this time around, I'm all for a modernization. And as much as I love the original score, I think if they are rebooting the franchise from the ground up (except that costume! Don't touch that design!), then we need brand new Superman music to go with it. Let's face it, we've already had one 'homage' to the Christopher Reeve era with Superman Returns. We don't need another one. I'm really looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

Even when Superman movies aren't five star, I love watching them. This will undoubtedly be awesome.

As long as they have him kicking ass like Optimus Prime , I am in favour of this.

I just hope the Superman in this new version can fly, Have heat vision and X-Ray vision.

TigerClaw on Feb 10, 2011

I hope by "physical" they mean to put Cavill on massive amounts of test and HGH and get that guy HUGE!

Blackmanju on Feb 10, 2011

Yeah.. and, they'll need to put some "super lifts" in his "Super Boots", since he's only 6'1". Or, they can hire really short actors and actresses to stand next to him.

gg on Feb 11, 2011

why are people obsession about him "only" being 6Ft 1? They made Hugh Jackman look small in X-Men. anyway 6Ft 1 is tall by hollywood standards. clooney/Pitt are under 6ft. Guys like Jackman/Clive Owen/Matthew Fox are around the 6-2 mark.

im not much of a fan of snyders. at all. but...this has potential to be really good. it just seems like a good mix. the way he does action may fit really well with superman

He loves Jim Lee's run on Superman, so I'm golden for now.

Why isn't Jon Hamm Superman????

Richie Gaynor on Feb 10, 2011

Because he is too old (no offense), they needed a younger guy who was a better fit for Clark and Henry Cavill fit the bill. Maybe in Superman: The Retired Years we'll see Hamm?

Dont drop the ball on this one Snyder!

Beyond the names involved (Nolan, Goyer, Snyder) I haven't seen much to pique my interest yet. I understand the need to be vague or else give too much away; but they're being so nondescript that I can't get a proper lock on what to expect. I dread the idea of an emo-styled Superman; and I can't really see the point in making him 'darker' or 'edgier'. I do think they can present the character with situations that are darker and/or edgier; but I don't see the point in tinkering too much with the character himself. I'd like having at least one superhero who is steadfast in his conviction of right and wrong. He can disapprove of the villains in the story; but still have a sense of altruism that keeps him from doing much more than preventing villains from committing crimes. The drama could then be built out of the arch villain putting that sense of altruism to an extreme test; and playing out whether or not Superman remains merciful or gives in to a desire for retribution.

Meh, the trinity is what's SUPPOSED to make you excited. Obviously these three have most likely came up with your idea, and have ideas of their own. They haven't even started production yet, so there's nothing yet to be ''excited'' about besides the names. With Snyder in there, that's already enough for me. But with NOLAN there too? 8==D~~~

it would be great to see him against a villain that would actuallt be able to have super fights and i'm talking punching each other through buildings and the city being evacuated during the fights because its that intense and all the while lex in the side lines on track to become president which would eventually lead to superman having to kill lex in the futre and everything changing. people should also check out the DC Universe cinematic on youtube.

Andy on Feb 10, 2011

Modern because it'll feel like a newer comic book movie (though it could go either the Dark Knight/Iron Man or Superman Returns/Wolverine route). Physical because Superman is going to actually beat the shit out of people instead of just shooting lasers out of his eyes or throwing cars at robots. Let's just hope he doesn't try to condense too much of Superman's origins within the film; Superman Returns didn't do that at all and had a lot of time throughout to have an awesome story, though it ended up being Superman: The Dramafest. I really stopped caring when I learned it wasn't related to Smallville, but I am interested in Snyder's projects. Hopefully he doesn't fuck it up or try and make it have a tone that doesn't fit Superman.

Phil on Feb 10, 2011

You guys aren't getting the hint. "Physical" as in there will be someone/something powered up enough to actually engage in physical combat with Superman. Most of the time in the movies, ESPECIALLY Superman Returns, he is fighting mere humans.

Snyder is the man! I trust his vision and can't wait to see it.

Marc Walker on Feb 10, 2011

John Williams score of Superman is the most recognizable theme in the world. That IS the sound of SUPERMAN! Anything else will fall short melodically. FACT.

hope its not boring like the owl joint

Jonnyb61 on Feb 11, 2011

My concerns are that I heard Nolan's wife Emma Thomas say that the Superman film is all in Snyder's hands now because Nolan is going to be shooting The Dark Knight Rises. It's like Nolan has his name on the project but won't be over seeing the final prouct and that has me worried. Snyder is still and up and coming director. Sure the visuals in 300 and Watchmen are great but the story, acting and pace of the films are not that great. I hope that he sticks to Goyer's and Nolan's script. That's the only saving grace here. I wished Nolan was directing this. I want to see a Christopher Nolan Superman film. That would be fantastic.

Lost Son on Feb 12, 2011

Zack Snyder is perfect for this! I'm so excited for this, I know it's gonna look great and I just love Zack, he's the man!
