Though they've got some hard work to do before reaching Pixar levels of quality in their work, Sony Pictures Animation is still responsible for the spectacular adaptation of Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, so they've got some magic somewhere in their ranks. Now it looks like they'll have the chance to prove their skill again with another adaptation of a popular established property as the animation company has announced plans to adapt Pooch Café, the comic strip by Paul Gilligan. Shrek 2 co-director and Gnomeo and Juliet helmer Kelly Asbury will sit in the director's chair for the animated feature film.
The film will follow Poncho, a cheese-loving, squirrel-fearing, toilet-drinking mutt who joins his canine friends at the Pooch Café, a neighborhood hangout where dogs can be dogs. It's basically like a family friendly bar for dogs with the canines can be found comparing notes on such weighty issues as avoiding baths, zebra-flavored kibble, and the construction of a giant catapult with which to hurl all the Earth’s cats into the Sun. You know, normal dog behavior. Sounds like there could be the potential for a witty and fun look into the social lives of dogs when they're not busy being man's best friend. Stay tuned.
