Surprise! Johnny Depp Likely Signing for 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5'

Though On Stranger Tides, the fourth film in the high seas Pirates of the Caribbean franchise merely struck me as a lame sequel doing nothing but treading water in familiar territory, the rest of the world has pushed the film over $1 billion in box office and it currently sits at #7 on the all-time world box office leaders chart. Therefore, it's no surprise that The Wrap reports Johnny Depp is already close to signing a deal to start in a fifth film for the Disney theme park franchise. We've been hearing about a fifth and even sixth film in the series since before On Stranger Tides came out, but this makes it even more official.
Back in December cast and crew had been told to set aside a chunk of time in the future to shoot a fifth and sixth installment in the series back-to-back, but it's not clear if that's still the plan with Depp only close to signing on for the fifth film. Back in May when On Stranger Tides hit theaters producer Jerry Bruckheimer said, "Hopefully, if this one does well, (Depp) will want to come back and play the character again. But it’s going to depend on the screenplay. It always does. He’s maniacal about not wanting to disappoint his audience.” Well, the film has done well, but here's hoping the script delivers a little more quality adventure this time around.

Why else are the fans going to see the Pirates movies. The story? I mean for heaven's sake, Disney even changed the face of the Pirate's ride Jack to look like Depp.

The fact that Jack Sparrow felt nothing like Jack Sparrow in the new Pirates annoyed me...so I'm really not interested in another Pirates film.

Actually for pirates 4, he received $55.5 million. So I see like an unprecedented $100 million deal.

I've got a feeling that Pirates of the Caribbean 5 will be coming to theaters on May 24th, 2013 Friday. Which is about 4 days after Pirates 4's theatrical release, but 2 years later.

I wondered what they used all the money on for the last Pirates movie as it looked like a low budget movie. They seemes to have used it on Depps salary then? It felt tired boring and no one seemed to even try, just went through the motions and looked like they shot most of it on the stage of some theater.

It didn't have a story did it? More and more they just become adverts for the theme park or extremely long trailers for a new film that never seems to arrive, just more lengthy trailers. Dunno really.

Depp has made 350 Million off of the 4 pirates movies. Ignore the first since it was not exactly the biggest paycheck. But it was the time where Depp became a STUDIO actor and not the quirky odd ball role taker of the 1990s. He is a great actor and people do love the character even though the movies have gotten state. The more power to him if there is a demand for the POTC movies to continue. he may be just making up for lost wages from the 1990s. LOL

This is not coming as a surprise for me. A surprise will be the comeback of Keira. She was genius.

I have been a big Depp fan from his very early days on 21. I consider him one of the most versatile and greatest actors of our generation. Of course I loved his first portrayal of Jack, but was disappointed that he signed to do the 2 sequels given his style. Extremely disappointed that he signed to do the 4th given the last 2 horrid sequels and now not sure what to say that he now signed on to this 5th sequel
