The Dark Knight Rises

It's almost here. Only 16 more days. Warner Bros has confirmed and officially announced (press release via ComingSoon) a surprisingly short list of IMAX theaters that will be showing the highly anticipated prologue to The Dark Knight Rises. As stated when this was first discovered, this six-minute opening sequence of the film will only be showing in select 70mm IMAX theaters worldwide, including many in the US and a few in Canada and the UK as well. The Prologue will be released in North America on December 16th in front of Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol and in the UK on December 21st. The full list of theaters below!

The prologue will serve as "an introduction to Bane, and a taste of the rest of the film," as was mentioned by Nolan himself. DP Wally Pfister and Nolan employed the extremely high-resolution IMAX cameras even more extensively on The Dark Knight Rises to achieve unprecedented crispness and clarity and a truly immersive experience for the moviegoers. Here's the statement attached from Christopher Nolan:

"Our experience on The Dark Knight shooting and projecting IMAX 15 perf 65mm/70mm film was inspiring. The immersive quality of the image goes beyond any other filmmaking tool available, and in revisiting Gotham, we were determined to shoot even more of the movie in this unique format. Giving the fans an early look at an IMAX sequence is a great way to draw attention to what I believe will be an incredible way to experience our story when it comes out next summer."

I'll be skipping this. I can't wait for the movie, but I'd rather wait for the entire thing a few months from now.

Dalton Weaver on Dec 1, 2011

Thats it? :/ man. How long is it in theaters?

Guss on Dec 1, 2011

How can this not be in New Jersey? The Jersey City one is the largest Dome Imax in the nation, and the one in Palisades is more than legitimate. This wangs chung.

Al on Dec 1, 2011

Agreed.  Its only in AC.  I dislike how "limited" this is.  Also, I don't know why they picked the Franklin Institute as the one place to have it in the PHiladelphia area.  There are two much nicer ones, one in Cherry Hill and one in King of Prussia.

Brian Marino on Dec 2, 2011

Cause it's Jersey. >.>

KH on Dec 18, 2011

That's completely ridiculous...Is the trailer that epic that it has to be seen on Imax? Freaking stupid...I'll be waiting for a bootleg version of it to hit online. I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to have the movie only in Imax theatres.

Anonymous on Dec 1, 2011

This is not the trailer; it's the first six or seven minutes. They did this with The Dark Knight and screened the bank heist sequence in front of select IMAX screenings of I Am Legend. It worked then to get people even more excited about the film, and it should work this time too.

Zachary Huizenga on Dec 1, 2011

And no, The Dark Knight Rises will NOT be screened exclusively in IMAX.

Zachary Huizenga on Dec 1, 2011

oh ok thanks for the info I didn't know it was done in that fashion previously before because I saw I am Legend in theatres to watch the trailer but not in Imax.

Anonymous on Dec 1, 2011

He's correct, TDKR will show in regular theaters as well as IMAX, this is just a special IMAX prologue event. Not sure why it's so limited, but it makes it exclusive for now.

Alex Billington on Dec 1, 2011

I Am Legend in IMAX had the first 7-8 minutes of The Dark Knight back in 2007.

Chris Amaya on Dec 2, 2011

15 mins or so of Avatar was shown by itself. In enough theaters to make it here too, which is why I was hoping we'd get a chance to see it. Oh well, looks like I'll just wait till Ghost Protocol airs on FX.

Anonymous on Dec 2, 2011

Palm Springs WOOOO!!! ^-^

Anonymous on Dec 1, 2011

Never mind, apparently the Palisades Imax is in New York (not true). Whatever, I'm happy that I'll get to see it after all.

Al on Dec 1, 2011

Palisades is in NY

Joe on Dec 2, 2011

Not the mall buddy.

Al on Dec 2, 2011

*waits for amateur youtube video to be uploaded* Oh hell, i'll go and pay for Ghost Protocol just to watch the prologue and then leave before the movie starts. I mean its Nolan for Christ sakes!

Johnny So Rad on Dec 1, 2011

if it were in my hometown, id do the exact same thing haha. I have no plans nor no intentions on seeing another MI...or Tom Cruise.

JBrotsis on Dec 1, 2011

Haha.  I don't care how many rants Mel Gibson goes on over the phone and gets recorded doing so, I'd still prefer to watch him than Tom Cruise.  Anyone who actually believes in scientology is fucking cracked.  And Cruise isn't really that great.

JL on Dec 1, 2011

It doesn't really matter does it? A pirated version will probably be on the internet at least 5 minutes before the midnight release of the film it's attached to.

Shaun on Dec 1, 2011

Please don't watch a bootleg... but I realize if you have no choice and there isn't one in your state, there's not much you can do... :/

Alex Billington on Dec 1, 2011

Except for the quality difference of watching it on an IMAX and watching a compressed version of it on your computer monitor.

Jacob on Dec 2, 2011

The movie was filmed in Pittsburgh but it isn't being shown here. 🙁 hope the premier is here though.

Enny_76 on Dec 1, 2011

Alex, it'll be on all the IMAX prints right? So, I'll still be able to see the opening on Saturday and Sunday? Not just the midnight showing? I don't want to have to sit in line for 6 hrs to get a good seat (I will if I have to though:). Can't wait Inception was so beautiful in IMAX. I'm never going to see a fantastic movie in regular theaters again. I don't think I would have seen MI in IMAX (though Brad Bird would have had me hesitate) but I hope The Amazing Spiderman, The Hobbit, Prometheus and The Avengers all end up in IMAX.

Anonymous on Dec 1, 2011

Yes, as far as I know it'll still be playing through the weekend at these locations. Details are sort of... still unclear... on all of this. But yes, the word was that it's supposed to be showing in front of MI4, for however long that's playing. Which is why it's odd it's only these theaters.

Alex Billington on Dec 1, 2011

As stoked as I am, since its not in my hometown (wtf....Fresno is the fourth largest city in CA and we don't get it in our IMAX, but you give it to shitty Palm Springs???) I'd still rather see the whole movie on screen.  Plus I wouldn't doubt it if a month goes by and somehow that prologue leaks onto the internet or appears somewhere in good quality.

JBrotsis on Dec 1, 2011

Thank goodness the Scotiabank Theatre (my IMAX screen of choice) in listed.

Sean Kelly on Dec 1, 2011

Wow! Quebec City is there! Although I do not plan to see Ghost Protocol. Anyway, I don't even want to see the prologue; that's such a tease! I'll wait for the movie instead!

Moutchy on Dec 1, 2011

why not evansville?!!! why damn you?!!!

ninformant on Dec 1, 2011

WHY Not Wichita, KS Warren Theater IMAX?!? Come on Christopher Nolan, we have the largest IMAX in the US in Wichita. Plus we have have the fans to back up attendance since we consistently have largest IMAX attendance for shows in North America. Plus other than movies eating out there is nothing else to do here. Christopher Nolan let's put a smile on that Wichita face!

Wichita Dark Knight on Dec 1, 2011

The KS Warren IMAX is digital.  How big is the screen there.  I've always understood that the largest IMAX screens needed to project film because the digital technology to fill them wasn't good enough yet.  I've herd that New York and San Fransisco have the largest screens in the US, over 90 feet wide.

R2ind on Dec 1, 2011

the IMAX in Wichita opened last year. It is the biggest in US and one of the biggest in the world. It takes 2 digital projectors to fill the screen and seats just over 600 people..... I went Grand Opening last year and saw the first movie to be played on it. TRON was amazing..the imax in Wichita is a major tourist attraction now...

Man I know I feel cheated! I'm going to cry in a corner....

Christopher Dean on Dec 2, 2011

I just can't believe there isn't one theater for the entire state of Colorado. you'd think they want us to hype up the movie but maybe something will change and they spread it to more

Bubbatwo420 on Dec 1, 2011

Has anybody seen a feature film on an IMAX Dome theater before?  MOSI in Tampa, FL, is on the list -- but it's a dome.

John on Dec 1, 2011

I have, I saw Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban on a dome in Pittsburgh and it... was awful, one of the worst experiences I've had. Domes are for planetariums and Everest climbing 360° pictures, not movies... find another location if you can, if not... brace yourself for some very-warped Gotham.

Alex Billington on Dec 2, 2011

That's what I thought.  Thanks Alex.

John on Dec 2, 2011

Exactly.  this is why I won't be seeing it in my current town of Philadelphia.  I've seen things on that dome before and it blows.  They should not have hollywood movies there (especially when there are two perfectly fine ones outside of Philly). Sigh.

Brian Marino on Dec 2, 2011

I know a lot of people seem to be hating on the domes, but I found Star Trek pretty awesome on dome just the same.

Al on Dec 2, 2011

Damn..... how about the people who live in smaller states?!.... i live in AR and there are like TWO imax theatres in my city... i didnt want to see a pirated version, but im not driving to Texas for it!... Dont particularly care for imax, but I would have paid the $16 just tobe able to see it first hand

Steventraff on Dec 1, 2011

DC in the house!!! who else?

Sedna on Dec 1, 2011

Its funny how they put atlantic city, tropicana under Philly.....

The Godless Cult of Sin and Greed is all that we Ex-Scientologists claim it is. 1. It kills, beats up, harms, harasses, stalks, and in always possible victimizes any ex-member and anyone else that opposes their evil agenda. 2. In the Sea Org., it forces its slave members to get abortions. It kills innocent babies so the mother can be more productive as a low paid slave. 3. It uses its slaves to repair the new bought buildings with money you have donated, which remain nearly empty years later, for pennies an hour. Its non-volunteer contracted workers get the lowest wages (.10 to .40 cents an hour) in the civilized world and work the longest (70-80) hours. 4. It exposes all your own sins and secrets in your endless Security Checks and/or required non-voluntary confessionals to bring you harm and destroy you, when you expose their evil Godless agenda and policy letters. 5. It has its own prison camp (The Rehabilitation Project Force, or RPF-- punishment duty for unsatisfactory workers and children) with Ronbot guards with automatic assault weapons, where you are sent if you fail to be very productive or angry or upset with your slavery. Slaves are not allowed to voluntarily leave or even escape and will be shot if they try. 95% of the slaves that finally are allowed to leave, soon leave the cult. The other 5% are sent to “fair game” the rest. 6. It has broken up hundreds of thousands of families by their Godless policies of Disconnection and Fair Game. Many parents have committed suicide after losing their kids. 7. If you oppose them, the Godless cult sends their slaves to your neighbors, job, relatives and friends to ask questions in such a way, that makes them think you are a rapist, criminal, sociopath, drug addict, child molester, Gay or Lesbian or a deviant, without any proof or verified criminal complaint. They use this Godless tactic to ruin you, cause you to get fired, and cause your friends and relatives to avoid you or even intentionally cause you to commit suicide. 8. As a last resort they will poison your pets or let them loose to get run over, break into your house for any evidence to blackmail you, plant drugs in your car or house or hit you to make you retaliate and film you when you do, and then they will sue you and/or have you arrested. There are hundreds of other reasons to run from this Godless cult. But I think you get an idea of its evil. Please help us Independent Scientologists to bring back ethics, humanity, compassion, honesty and integrity back into the group. Help us stop them! Note! all the above has been verified as true over the years by Governments and hundreds of thousands of Ex-Scientologists. THE RONBOT HUNTER ALL RIGHTS RESERVED

Where's Dallas? Missing MAJOR market!

Brandonfitz on Dec 2, 2011

*guy in dallas waving hand here* YESSS!!! WHAT THE HELL!!

Dallas Texas Guy on Dec 2, 2011

I'm REALLY pissed off because it's not in Dallas, but then against, besides the TI Founders theater, DFW only has one true IMAX theater, the Cinemark 17 on Webb Chapel Rd.  They probably couldn't a get done for it at that theater and didn't want to do it at one of the many "faux-max" screens around.

Does anyone know if the prologue will only be playing on the 16th?

Gio_cavaliere on Dec 3, 2011

It'll be playing for a while. Not just the 16th 🙂

Chris Amaya on Dec 3, 2011

I believe that Warner bros. should allow this 6 min preview to be shown on the web . It's not fair that a select few get to see it . Now I have to wait till July to see any of it . Ridiculous ! I love Christopher Nolan's movies but come on a lot of ppl got to see it why not post it on the web and get your fans even more pumped up for the movie .

Ravmaster12 on Mar 20, 2012

It's only playing in IMAX theaters with a certain aspect ratio given the way it was filmed.  They'll be converting it to play on all IMAX screens as well as non-IMAX theaters when the actual movie is released.  However, for this special prologue event, it'll only be the original format, with no conversion.

Dramaking2012 on Dec 3, 2011

Wait a minute, "Miami, FL - AutoNation IMAX - Fort Lauderdale"? I don't understand! AutoNation IMAX is located in Ft. Lauderdale, right? So why the hell is Miami, FL listed if it isn't even going to be there? Is this a mistake, Alex?

John on Dec 6, 2011

is there any showings in perth australia? please let me know!

Onpatsyquigs on Dec 7, 2011

How is it being released in front of Ghost Protocol on the 16th if Ghost Protocol doesnt come out until the 21st? and is it only a one time thing? or is it playing on every showing of Ghost Protocol at these theatres?

AveryLaF on Dec 8, 2011

Why are there three cities from Texas showing this and not one of them is Dallas!?

Anonymous on Dec 9, 2011

Only four cinemas in the UK? And the nearest is 102 miles down the A1 in Bradford? Well f*ck.
