'The Departed' Writer William Monahan Hired to Work on 'Sin City 2'

Sin City

Earlier this month, the impossible seemed to be happening as the long-awaited Sin City 2, the sequel to the 2005 graphic novel adaptation from Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, had landed financing and was waiting for a final script. Now word comes from Heat Vision that the man delivering the new version of the script will be William Monahan, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind The Departed and the upcoming sci-fi flick Horizons from Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski. The writer will work on a recently completed draft from Miller with shooting hopefully starting before the end of the year.

The project has very suddenly come together after word came from Rodriguez at Comic-Con that the sequel may finally have legs. Of course, since those words have been uttered every year since the first film was released, no one really expected this to happen so quickly. As it stands shooting will begin as soon as the script is locked down. However, at this time, it's not clear which surviving characters from the original film will return since no story details have yet been confirmed. Personally, I'm interested in seeing the project finally come together if only because Rodriguez's work following the 2005 adaptation has been mostly disappointing, and this sounds like a great project to get him back on the right track, especially with a writer like Monahan working on the script now.

Spy Kids 5D will probably come out before Sin City 2 does.

Monahan is a great writer, Kingdom of Heaven is still amazing to watch and he did a great job with the Departed.

F**k yeah about KOH...has to be one of the greatest films ever made.  And despite the constant comparisons to INFERNAL AFFAIRS, I did like THE DEPARTED. I'm pulling for Monahan, because he's someone who became a screenwriter "late" in life--he wasn't in his 20s when he penned KOH; he was in his 40s, I believe.  So he's earned it.

I have to disagree with Alex. I think Rodriguez has done great work since Sin City. The kids' movies aside, I loved Grindhouse, Machete was awesome, and his production of Predators I thought was really good.

This movie will be out at the same time as the next Duke Nukem game.

Monahan has done some good work, and at least The Spirit has ensured that Frank Miller won't be allowed near a camera for another decade. So this could actually be ok, if it does come out at all.
