100 Best Comedy Movies

Are you ready to laugh? (Get it?) Time for another list of best movies to discuss and argue for weeks. Time Out London has created and revealed their list of the 100 Best Comedy Movies, as chosen by "more than 200 people whose job it is to make you laugh." In reality, what that means is they actually asked "dozens of comedy writers, comedy directors, comic actors and stand-up comedians" to choose their own favorites, including picks from Dan Aykroyd, Richard Curtis, Edgar Wright, Kim Noble, Stephen Merchant, Jo Brand and many more. We've pulled the full list (via SlashFilm) of all 100 for you below for discussion purposes.

Over on the Time Out site, they have a full rundown and write-ups, details and more info for all 100 of the comedies. 2. Airplane! (1980)
1. This Is Spinal Tap (1984)

This is such a comprehensive and complete list (since it has 100 of the greatest titles), that there's really not any comedies that I love that aren't on here (except for maybe Frank Oz's Death at a Funeral, to name one). But that's the thing, comedy is so subjective, that everyone has their own comedic tastes and favorites and there might be one or two that didn't make the cut. That said, these 100 I think definitely embody a line-up of movies that I might even call objectively very funny, to most people, as a lot of these on here are my favorites as well. Glad to see them put together a list like this with so many great comedic contributors, too.

For those who may not be entirely satisfied, the Time Out London site also includes a fantastic section that has favorite lists of comedies from ALL of the contributors, organized by their name (most are UK based). For example, Edgar Wright has some of the top choices like This Is Spinal Tap, Airplane!, Blazing Saddles and Life of Brian as his favorites as well, but also listed Raising Arizona as his actual #1 best comedy. Dan Aykroyd also has favorites on his list that include the Marx Brothers' Duck Soup, The Great Dictator, Dr. Strangelove and Goodfellas. There's just such a wide range of fantastic, hilarious comedies to choose from!

Are there any truly great comedies that are missing? What do you think of this "all time" list?

No "Fired Up"? Would've at expected to see that in a 70's or 80's slot

Armeetapus16 on Sep 16, 2011

And Brazil needs to be higher, at least in the 60's

Armeetapus16 on Sep 16, 2011

agree with the movies (mostly) but not the order

jC on Sep 16, 2011

Annie Hall and Withnail & I are fine films indeed, but to say they are funnier than The Jerk or The Big Lebowski is a straight fucking lie.

Time Out London's Complete List of 100 Best Comedy Movies is really a list of 99 films in english and only one in french. If they don´t know anything about others country's cinema, they shouldn´t call it that way. These "list" things are always bullshit to fill magazines.

If this was a list of 100 best movies or 100 best dramas, I might let this slide. However, in a list about comedies, where a large percentage of what makes them funny is comedic timing, subtitles are going to be a hinderance to enjoyment most of the time. Take your film snobbery elsewhere and attempt to get some enjoyment out of something in the world.

Groov on Sep 16, 2011

You are a little misunderstandig. 1.-The problem is the title of the list, as most over all other lists made in the USA or the UK. Is not the same the english spoken world than the world. 2.- I'm not really that snob. I'm european, you know (perhaps both concepts are the same to you). 3- I'm really sorry if you are a slow reader. Try to practice a little and you will see.

Pointing out a lack of foreign films is hardly film snobbery; the fact that you think it is only goes to show just how marginalised foreign film is in the UK, despite the fact that we are a European country and have populations that consist of people from all kinds of backgrounds. Subtitles are only a hindrance when you're not used to them; and if you're so bothered by them, why not watch a dubbed version?

My favorite comedy is Fired Up 🙂 sadly though not many people like that movie.. Mean Girls is my #2 glad at least that one made the list.

Davide Coppola on Sep 16, 2011

'Shrek' was hilarious at the time... also.. 'coming to America', 'The Nutty Professor', 'SUPER', superbad, American Pie, I love you man, The other Guys, TOY STORY, the 40 year old virgin, MRS DOUBTFIRE ... But maybe that's just me.

Rhythmdave on Sep 16, 2011

I kinda thought Super was pretty awful myself, and a lot of the others on there are not exactly good quality or memorable. Toy Story is pretty great though, but I don't see any other animated movies in here, so I'm not really surprised by it not being there.

Fired Up is pretty good.  Raising Arizona is in my top 5. Caddyshack should be aleast in the top 10. Everybody's order would be different, but it's a decent list. Dont be a Menace and Superbad is missing?

Posthuman on Sep 16, 2011

I agree, Caddyshack is a top 10 comedy for sure!

Peter Kosmal on Sep 16, 2011

No In Bruges ? Intermission ? Burn After Reading ? Crna macka, beli macor was also effin hillarious as far as i remember(saw it ages ago). Anyways the list is pretty weak, with titles like Bridesmaids etc, also a lot of other films that were pretty enjoyable but not very funny, at least to me. Glad to see In The Loop on the list, that's prob my fav comedy of all times.

Dawhoore on Sep 16, 2011

In Bruges is a comedy? I mean... it's got funny stuff, but it's about a guy who accidentally kills a kid and is suicidally depressed. That would be like calling Pulp Fiction a comedy.

Anonymous on Sep 17, 2011

I'd say In Bruges is a comedy; its humour is the main draw for the film, and I think it was definitely marketed as a comedy. Although you're right, it's a lot darker than comedies tend to be. Then again, Dr. Strangelove was about a nuclear holocaust, so I guess it's all relative.

Nash Sibanda on Oct 14, 2011

Brazil is a comedy?

The Modern Gafa on Sep 16, 2011

I was surprised to see it on there too! It's funny in a lot of ways but certainly not a comedy. I mean, the ending, sheesh.

The Dude will not stand for this, man!

happy camper on Sep 16, 2011

Where the hell is Hot Shots? It rivals Naked Gun and Airplane! so far as I'm concerned.

Anonymous on Sep 16, 2011

Where's Step Brothers...? top ten hands down with the blooper reel making it #1.

SamuraiV on Sep 16, 2011

Wet Hot American Summer????

Cnewiu on Sep 16, 2011

As a rule of thumb. When a professional comedian thinks something is funny, in 9 out of 10 cases it is not. It is comedy for comedians. I also despise *This is Spinal Tap* with a passion.

Shige on Sep 16, 2011

Super Troopers and a few of the other Broken Lizard Company movies should be up there.....Sister Act?  Zoolander?  Happy Gilmore?  Ick.  Also, the Grumpy Old Men movies should be on there, too.  Is Date Night up there?  That movie made me nearly wet myself.  Otherwise, pretty good list.

Jules on Sep 16, 2011

No Dude Where's My Car?!! No Scary Movie?!! No Meet the Spartans???!!! This list is bullsh*t! Nice to see the Castle made the top 25

El Hoopso on Sep 16, 2011

A Fish Called Wanda is there, but no Fierce Creatures. That seems weird to me.

Cowche on Sep 16, 2011

No Pink Flamingos? What da fuuuu? Evil Dead 2? He he, different strokes for different folks.

Crapola on Sep 17, 2011

Caddyshack is WAY too low! Also, Clerks should be higher, maybe ranked 37? Hmmmm...

Anonymous on Sep 17, 2011

No "Black Dynamite". They are wrong.

Anonymous on Sep 17, 2011

This list is...interesting. A lot of the entries are fantastic comedies, and then are some that are questionable picks. Then you get to the order. Maybe it's just different strokes for different folks...but damn I would reorder a bunch of the list.

horgin on Sep 17, 2011

I like 91!

Avi on Sep 18, 2011

I'm surprised "Wedding Crashers" wasn't on the list????

JBrotsis on Sep 18, 2011

No Tommy Boy!?!? This list is worthless.
