Don't Be Afraid of the Dark Trailer

Come and join us… A brand new full-length trailer for Troy Nixey's chilling new Don't Be Afraid of the Dark movie, with Guillermo del Toro as producer, has arrived online courtesy of Empire. FilmDistrict is finally putting this out on August 26th. We'd only seen an early teaser before, but now we have the official trailer, as this is the US version as well as the UK one from Optimum. The film is about a young girl, played by Bailee Madison, who goes to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes) in a big old house. But this house has some secrets. This looks insanely scary for a new horror flick. Can't wait!

Here's the quick synopsis: A young girl (Bailee Madison) sent to live with her father (Guy Pearce) and his girlfriend (Katie Holmes) discovers creatures in her new home who want to claim her as one of their own.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark was directed by up-and-coming filmmaker and comic book artist Troy Nixey, of only the Latchkey's Lament short previously. The script was co-written by Matthew Robbins (Dragonslayer, Mimic, The Concert) and Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth The Hobbit). This is a remake of the 1973 TV movie Don't Be Afraid of the Dark directed by John Newland starring Kim Darby. FilmDistrict, who took over for Miramax, is finally releasing Don't Be Afraid of the Dark on August 26th this summer.

Creepy indeed. Horror films are all about tone and mood...and the tone and mood of this film seems to be very well done...might just see this.

yea - i'd add that setting/enviroment is important too. also, most remakes tend to not measure up ("the fog" for example); but, this is looking really good. hey! if you haven't seen "wild target" yet.....watch it. it's a funny watch. bill nighy is hilarious.

Good to see ya man! The Atmosphere of a horror is all important. Most today keep ignoring that element and they fail.

oh, i'm always in and out checking out the new trailers. i'm really excited to see "a little help". i just saw "i love you phillip morris"  and i thought it was excellent.

I found "I Love you Phillip Morris" hilarious and well acted, Carrey was fantastic. What did you think of the trailer for 50/50?

Xerxexx on May 28, 2011

i thought the opening of the 50/50 trailer of rogen and the other guys was bizarre - very unnecessary. however - the movie looks pretty good. JGL has impressed me ever since he was a kid on "3rd rock from the sun".  i loved the part when his mom said she was moving in and when he blurts out to the girl at the club that he has cancer......good stuff. the movie i don't see what's so exciting about is the new G. clooney family  movie (the name escapes me).  i thought it seemed a standard "meh" - but, alex was talking oscar material.......i didn't see that at all. "the whistleblower" looked  OK  except in the end it seemed to de-evolve into  a "one person taking on the system" kind of the thing. hey! i just saw a trailer for  "kill the irishman"......i can't wait to see it!! it's got a great cast and has a stylish mob feel like  "rock and rolla" did. on a final note - i just saw "the way back" recently. it was a good movie; however, i thougt "as far as my feet will carry me" was a more entertaining (and superior) movie.......both movies had wonderful endings though. don't forget "wild target" - it's worth if for bill nighy alone.

"The Descendants" I think it looks fantastic...its a wait and see kinda film. Whistle Blower looks  pretty decent...Weisz is gonna be the reason I see it. I'll have to check out "Kill the Irishman" trailer. I loved "The Way Back" Peter Weir is one of my favorite directors...but it wasn't an amazing movie. "Wild Target"? I'll definitely check it out.

"kill the irishman" trailer is on youtube. i think you'll love it. "the decendants"......yea, that's the name. sorry i couldn't think of it. i think "a little help" looks to be a far more enjoyable watch - but that's me. and clooney seems to be acting in the same way no matter what character he does in what movie - so, he ends up appearing to be the same guy even though he's supposedly portraying different characters. (that's not to say i don't like his movies - i enjoyed "up in the air").

I'll check it out for sure! As for The Descendants I just like stories about parents and kids repairing relationships.

I'm interested to check it out too, Xerxexx...I remember watching the original film on tv as a kid and it scared the shit out of me.  And that was a "made for TV" movie!!

Ehhh.  Little monsters aren't really scary.  I thought it was another haunted house tale with demons, which, although done to death, would've been scarier to me.

I didn't find little creatures scary at all, but I don't think Guillermo del Toro would have signed off on this flick if it wasn't remotely creepy! I will place it in my Netflix queue!

scared me but I always prefer not to see the ghosts/demons/creatures/bad guy in the actual trailer

How is this PG-13?? It scared the crap out of me!! LOL! It looks good though. Am I the only one who thinks getting scared is not entertaining?

Ron on May 27, 2011

15

Ron, you're probably not the only one.  But remember, a horror film is supposed to scare you--or at least give you that "hair standing on end" feeling. And you're right--GDT's films does not disappoint.  But have you read his STRAIN novels yet?  It's some of the best vampire fiction I've read in a long time.

No I haven't. I will check it out for sure. Thanks!

Looks very good! I remember the original too, that last part of this trailer gets me everytime! Interesting to see the greatest actor alive(Guy Peace)in a horror flick!

After my experience with Battle: LA, I can never again trust a trailer.  But if I throw caution to the wind, it seems they have definately acknowledged the importance of atmosphere in building suspense with this film. Little (or big) monsters in film do not scare me either...but each to their own hey?  However, the fact that they even went beyond implying that it is monsters and gave us a full frame reveal at the end of the trailer is a big let down.  Why do we live in such times where immediate gratification is permeating into everything? Still, kudos to the film makers for what look likes an interesting film that is sure to cause some jumps for many watching.

I'm confused.... You say this is PG-13, but isn't this rated R?

JL on May 28, 2011

on IMDB this movie is listed as Rated-R not PG-13

I click "like" on this. Looking forward to it.

Hallospaceboy on May 28, 2011

It was originally going to be PG-13. The MPAA came back and gave it an R rating because of pervasive scariness. This makes me want to see the movie even more.

yawn.  how many times have we seen this concept? haunted house haunts new family. bigger yawn.

Jimmy Cowen on May 29, 2011

Del Toro is a master of creativity and that trailer had his fingerprints all over it. May not be original in concept, but it carries his trend of creative excellence and looks to give new life to a previously heavily trodden idea.  There is crap, and there is art. This is art.

Quazzimotto on May 29, 2011

Alex, this movie is rated R, shows it right in the trailer. I am looking forward to this glad to see Katie Holmes back in acting.

I feel like I've seen the "person looking under the covers and then something jumps out" gimmick in a trailer before. Like that exact last scene...any ideas?
